The Acute Medical Division is looking to develop our workforce and build upon our enthusiastic, highly skilled and expanding team of Advanced Clinical Practitioner's in delivering care with compassion.

With this in mind, we have an exciting opportunity for an individual with experience in Acute Medicine to join our team of trainee and qualified ACP's in Acute Medicine.

As a trainee ACP you will receive mentoring from qualified ACP's, consultant supervision and regular dedicated teaching time. Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is renowned for our teaching, training and support with modern educational facilities and simulation suites.

Furthermore, a range of formative and summative workplace-based assessments in practice will be completed throughout the programme to demonstrate progression and competence.


You will possess proven leadership experience and have recent, substantial acute medical experience and clinical skills and a willingness to undertake further study.

You will support the medical teams whilst developing your advanced clinical assessment skills, including assessment of patients, diagnostic skills and understanding of investigations, supported with academic learning and clinical supervision.

As a trainee ACP you will work across sites within our Same Day Emergency Care and Medical Assessment Units and also have opportunity to work alongside the medical on call team in-reaching into the Emergency Department.

You will demonstrate safe, clinical decision-making and will work collaboratively with Consultants and the multi-disciplinary team to meet the needs of patients, supporting the delivery of policies and procedures

  • To practice autonomously with a high level of accountability at an advanced clinical level in the direct delivery of high quality care, making critical clinical decisions based on advanced clinical skills assessment.
  • Plan and manage complete episodes of care, working in partnership with others and delegating and referring as appropriate to optimise health outcomes and resource use, as well as providing direct support to patients and clients.
  • To provide clear leadership and direction to support both the medical and nursing teams acting as a role model for the Trust, presenting a positive image to patients and staff.
  • Advocate and contribute to the development of an organisational culture that supports continuous learning and development, evidencebased practice and succession planning.
  • Critically engage in research activity, adhering to good research practice guidance, so that evidence based strategies are developed and applied to enhance quality, safety, productivity and value for money.
  • As an innovator, role model and clinical leader embrace and implement the vision and values of LTHTR.
  • In conjunction with the medical staff, be responsible for coordinating the admission, assessment and discharge arrangements of acute medical patients.


The trainee ACP role is at Agenda for Change Band 8a, using Annex 21 whilst training, which will be reviewed with uplift to full Band 8a on successful completion of the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice, competencies and a period of consolidation and internship.
