'Transforming the Thames' Project Officer (C and P, Fixed-term - 18 months, Full-time)

Overview of the Role:

  • To support the ZSL Project Manager to deliver a partnership project funded by the Endangered Landscape Programme planning grant. 'Transforming the Thames' will seek to bring back the wildlife spectacle of the Thames by reconnecting the fragmented seascape through habitat protection and restoration. We will do this by developing a coastal habitat restoration plan for the Greater Thames Estuary (Whitstable to Felixtowe, and west to Dartford) at a seascape scale, cocreated with, and adopted by local communities across the estuary.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the creation of seascape coastal habitat plan which will inform restoration plans across the estuary for the next decade.

The postholder will support the day-to-day administration and organisation of developing the coastal habitat restoration plan with partners and stakeholders across the Estuary.

It will involve organising working groups, developing and following up with actions from groups, GIS mapping and coordination between partners and other groups.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Daytoday delivery of the project tasks and coordination of project partners to ensure activities and deliverables are achieved.
  • Organising partnership meetings such as technical working group meetings, project updates, steering committee meetings, as well as external stakeholder and community workshops and events.
  • Ensure scientific rigor in the project implementation ensuring a high quality of data is collected. Manage resultant data as directed and contribute to the data analysis, interpretation and presentation of results to a high standard.
  • Contribute significantly to report writing with delegated responsibility to lead some reports. This will include ZSL technical reports, donor report and others. This will include GIS
  • Updating and maintaining ZSL's Marine and Freshwater social media sites with support from ZSL's Conservation and Policy team.
  • Creating project reports when necessary for public viewing, that promote project aims and encourage input from community groups and organisations across the estuary.
  • Have experience of developing, engaging, and managing relationships with stakeholders.
  • Have experience in communicating at different levels with different audiences including volunteers, partners, and government.
  • Have experience with GIS and maintaining and manipulating large GIS datasets.
  • Have a BSc or MSc in relevant field such as freshwater ecology, environmental science, aquatic resource management, marine biology or social sciences etc
  • Have established skills in GIS.
  • Be proficient in report writing.
  • Have in depth knowledge of the technical field e.g. estuarine and coastal ecology including an understanding of the current challenges facing the UK aquatic environment.
  • Have excellent team working and interpersonal skills.
  • Be highly organised, selfmotivated, and able to work using own initiative.
  • Have an aptitude and ability to work under pressure, prioritise tasks and meet key deadlines.
  • Be able to multitask to meet key deadlines and take a flexible approach.
  • Hold a UK Drivers Licence
  • The post holder will work normal office hours but there will sometimes be a requirement to work out of office hours (early mornings, late evenings) or over weekends.
