Community Psychiatric Nurse

Waltham Forest Early Interventions in Psychosis Service are seeking a Registered Mental Health Nurse to join a friendly, motivated team working with Young People and Adults who are suspected of experiencing a first episode of psychosis.

The successful applicant will need to demonstrate a genuine interest and experience of working within the First Episode of Psychosis Model. They will also need to be able to demonstrate an ability to contribute to the evidence based assessment and treatment offered within the service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to complete detailed mental health assessments for 14-65 year olds, including the identification and management of risks posed to themselves, others or from others.

The post holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and will bring a nursing view to the team when representing the service in meetings with other agencies. They will contribute to a learning environment for students and will mentor student nurses. They will be expected to engage in regular clinical supervision and safeguarding supervision.

The post holder will be expected to maintain their own caseload working in an evidenced based and time limited way, including use of outcome monitoring to measure progress and client satisfaction. Interventions may involve working individually with service users and their carers, but also with families and groups. Sessions will take place at the team base or at other locations in the community, so willingness to work in an agile way within the borough is essential.

Additional training would be provided to ensure that the post holder has the skills required to fulfil the requirements of the post.

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focusing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

High Cost Area Supplement – London

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,313 and a maximum payment of £5,436 per annum pro rata).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

·To work collaboratively and effectively as a member of the multi-disciplinary team

·To work within the requirements of the CPA policy

·To receive and process referrals in line with the criteria and policies of the Access and Assessment and Brief Intervention service and EIP service as per joint protocol and guidance legislation.

·To be responsible and accountable together with the multi-disciplinary team for the provision of high quality clinical care and interventions to service users, carers and family.

·To ensure clinical treatment and interventions are needs led and implemented in compliance with CPA, improving Physical Healthcare to Reduce Premature Mortality in People with Severe Mental Illness Indicator 4 and the NICE concordant Standard 80. Treatment interventions include CBT, Family Intervention, comprehensive physical health assessment; Carer focused education and support programmes, medication choice and management, physical activity, smoking cessation, healthy eating programmes and interventions.

·Be proactive, innovative and creative in delivering care, enabling the facilitation of service user's recovery, empowerment and well-being.

·To ensure effective risk management by accident/incident reporting

·To be responsible for the provision of accurate recording of information required by the Trust for audit purposes and to contribute as requested by the clinical lead in the process of service audit and evaluation.

·To undertake the supervision of junior staff, mentorship, teaching and assessing of students and trainees on placement within the team.

Leadership responsibilities:

·To facilitate the development of a positive and supportive team culture by taking responsibility for dealing effectively with potential conflict

·To actively participate and promote integrated health professional working both internally and externally. Supporting team understanding, a value of roles and the contributions of other members of the MDT

·To deputise and support the clinical lead in the management duties within EIP when required by the clinical lead or EIP service manager , also when requested to represent the team or service internally and externally with other partner agencies.

·To meet the Trust and EIP data quality recording requirements , KPI's and CQUIN targets

·To report and manage incidents using the Trust and Local Authority policies and systems

·To take joint responsibility for the teaching and assessing of students and junior staff and other multi-disciplinary staff who have a placement within the Team

·To provide professional clinical supervision for junior and non-qualified staff, and appraisal utilising the authorised systems required by the Trust.

·To act as a Practice Mentor for nursing students on Professional Practice Placements.

·To assist the clinical lead to manage complaints when required, to lead investigations when requested and to ensure they are carried out as required and resolved successfully where possible and adhering to the Trusts duty of Candour Policy

·To work within agreed Trust policy, procedures and national guidance

Essential criteria

RMN Post Registration Qualification to Degree level or equivalent.

Desirable criteria

2 or more years experience in Community Mental Health services desirable Mentorship Qualification (or relevant experience of working with student nurses and willingness to attend training )

at Least 2 years Relevent experience of working therapeutically with young people and adults with psychosis along with their families
