Job summary

We would love for you to come and join us in this role. We are at the forefront of embedding the NHS Patient Safety Strategy having been one of the national early adopters for the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework.

This post will lead the Patient Safety investigations for the Trust, providing dynamic leadership and expert support to the patient safety agenda. The post holder will support the Patient Safety Specialist with the implementation of the National Patient Safety Framework in the Trust through embedding consistent system thinking and human factors principles.

The NHS Patient Safety Strategy sets out the two foundations of safety as being system and culture. You will be a key leader in ensuring that NBT has an embedded safety culture that encompasses the principles of civility, psychological safety and restorative just cultures.

We have implemented PSIRF and are focusing on the use of patient safety insights to drive improvement activities, applying improvement methodology. This is an important role in NBT's systematic approach to continuous improvement and, as such will directly manage and lead as required within the wider improvement infrastructure.

This post is open to registered clinicians and non-registered professionals. Should a registered clinician wish to apply, it is expected this will be maintained to ensure up to date registration.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assist healthcare professionals across the Trust to deliver safer care through an understanding of the effects of teamwork, tasks, equipment, workspace, culture, and organisation on human behaviour and identify contributory factors when incidents occur and make recommendations for systemic improvements.

The investigator will use recognised patient safety incident frameworks and tools encompassing principles of human factors and ergonomics, systems engineering, psychology and investigation best practice. A high level of sensitive engagement with patients, families, staff and others affected by incidents is expected of this role.

Job responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity to support the Head of Patient Safety to develop patient safety practice through managing and leading Patient Safety Investigations and utilising insights to understand safety in our organisation.

The post holder will also act as manager for the Patient Safety Manager and will deputise for and support the Patient Safety Specialist in the development and implementation of relevant strategy and policy to meet national NHS agenda, contracting requirements and organisational priorities relating to patient safety incident management.

Previous and demonstrable line management experience. Quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills, based on previous experience working in a relevant field. Demonstrable ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships across the Trust and externally, working positively with staff and the public, and an ability to work with different cultures, expectations and priorities.
