Job summary

This is an established 10 PA post for a Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist working within the Perinatal Psychiatry Service based at St. Nicholas Hospital. This vacancy has arisen with Consultant leaving the community service and the successful candidate will work with the well-established perinatal team.

Main duties of the job

This is a full time post and the post holder will be a key senior clinician in the Perinatal Mental Service.

They will hold weekly outpatient clinics seeing direct referrals from 's, Psychiatrists and Obstetricians, or the CPN's in the Perinatal Team and they will use new ways of working to participate in the review of patients within the Perinatal Community Mental Health Team, reviewing patients at home or in the outpatient clinics.

They will also provide (or ensure referral to the appropriate service for provision of) up to date evidence-based interventions, communicating and liaising with relatives, carers, GP's and other disciplines and agencies as appropriate.

The consultant will also assess and make recommendations under the Mental Health Act (Section 12(2) approved) and act as a Responsible Clinician for detained patients and complete any administrative tasks necessary for the fulfilment of the clinical role.

They will provide cross-cover for the other consultant in the service and provide medical leadership to the Perinatal Community Mental Health Team, collaborating with senior colleagues and taking a lead role in service improvements and development.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will provide senior medical input to the Perinatal Community Team in Tyne & Wear. They will hold three weekly outpatient clinics at St. Nicholas Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne (2 clinics) and Monkwearmouth Hospital, Sunderland (1 clinic), typically seeing one new patient and 4 follow-up patients per clinic. The post holder will contribute to the consultant on-call rota (area negotiable), which is currently 1 in 16.

Qualifications & Training

Essential

Registered as a Specialist in Psychiatry on GMC Specialist Register (or are eligible for such inclusion) or within six months of gaining CCT Approved under the section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act or equivalent, or willing and eligible to apply for approval Approved Clinician status, or willing and eligible to apply for approval

Desirable

Another post-graduate qualification (other than MRCPsych) Specialist training in Perinatal Mental Health

Knowledge

Essential

Up-to-date knowledge in the field of Perinatal Psychiatry Awareness of current issues in mental health service provision, policy and legislation

Desirable

Specialist interest in an area relevant to Perinatal Psychiatry Completion of training related to Perinatal Mental Health Specialist interest as demonstrated by publications or presentations to learned societies

Experience

Essential

Prior experience of providing clinical care for women in the perinatal period Experience of multidisciplinary team working Experience of community oriented services for people with severe mental illness

Desirable

Wide clinical experience of Perinatal Psychiatry both in an inpatient and community Experience of multiagency work, especially with user, carer and voluntary organisations Experience in service management development
