About the role

Applications are invited for outstanding early career researchers in the area of cancer sciences, who seek to establish scientific independence. This is a 2-year fellowship funded by the Biomedical Research Centre, intended to enable promising scientists to make the leap from post-doctoral researcher to being a junior group leader.

The post-holder will be expected to develop research projects within their chosen field in Haemato-oncology, Oncology, Cancer Biology or Pathology at the UCL Cancer Institute. 

For Pathology, the candidate should have a specific focus on the development of AI models for implementation into clinical practice. The candidate should work towards preparing an application for a Career Development Scientist fellowship (MRC, CRUK, Wellcome, UKRI), under mentorship and supervision within a research group in the Cancer Institute. They will be expected to develop their local and national profile in their chosen area of research and expertise. Where appropriate, collaboration with the relevant clinical specialty team, , via clinical academic group leader in the Cancer Institute is encouraged.

Salary offered will either be on Grade 8 (£51, - £60, per annum) or Grade 9 (£65, - £71, per annum) including London Allowance. 

About you

The successful candidate will have a PhD in relevant subject with first author publications from PhD and a good publication record. Experience of developing and executing a research project to completion including writing and publishing the results is essential, as is the ability to supervise research students to successful completion of projects. The candidate will have a proven research aptitude and laboratory experience with excellent communication skills/verbal and written. Ability to secure grant funding, either independently or in collaboration with senior PI is highly desirable.

For appointment as Principal Research Fellow at Grade 9, in addition to the criteria listed in the G8 person specification, the candidate is required to have gained an independent research reputation with national and international recognition of achievement within the subject area. They will have a leading role in an institutionally significant activity that has successfully delivered substantial research impact and a demonstrate significant contribution to enabling scientific input (and output) on research platforms. Proactive mentoring of early career researchers and other colleagues, including those from underrepresented groups is also essential.
