Job summary

Main duties of the job

Thepost holder will work together with senior staff and support staff in allsections of the Combined Laboratory to produce a timely, high quality, accurateand cost effective service.

Thepost holder will ensure the timely processing of patient samples, typically7500 a day, serving all those patients attending PHNT, PCTs representing 100General Practices and specialist assays referred to us from other Trusts withinthe Peninsula. The department performs million tests annually and employs123 wte.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To process biological samplesincluding blood, urine, faeces cerebral spinal fluid and other tissues, takingpersonal responsibility for the quality and authorisation of the results, whichare used in the diagnosis, treatment and management of disease.

To possess highly developedspecialist scientific skills.

The post holder will demonstrate thehigh level of skill to perform complex manual, semi automated and automatedanalytical techniques as applicable, meeting turnaround times with promptreporting of results used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

The post holder will be required toprovide complex information relating to test results, which may be sensitive innature.

As a state registered Scientist withthe Health Professions Council understand the pathology of disease inrelationship to the results produced whilst being aware of their significancein the authorisation of patients results with reference to the normal ranges.

Will be aware of the clinicalsignificance of results produced and using this knowledge to performappropriate supplementary tests/investigations relevant to providing a completereport to requesting clinicians.

To plan and prioritise workload ofBand 5 Biomedical Scientists, Trainee BMS and support staff.

To perform urgent analyses,reporting results to requesting clinicians as appropriate.

Identify abnormal or unexpectedresults and ensure prompt reporting, follow up and referral to medical staff asrequired.

Following protocols, requestadditional tests or samples to aid in the diagnosis or treatment of disease.

To understand the principlesunderlying the analytical processes used in your area of work so as to maintaintheir operation and quality of results.

Toreceive requests forms and accompanying samples, to book those into the PathComputer system, to prepare the samples (including centrifugation) foranalysis, to load and unload samples from analysers, to sort into racks andtransfer for storage on completion.

Answertelephone enquiries regarding results and other general laboratory issues giving advice on the correct conditions and sample type for a particular testrequest.

Tooperate analytical equipment within your section, within your discipline andwithin the department, some of which will be highly complex and requirespecialist training.

Toperform front line troubleshooting and repairs of analysers of highly complex,expensive automated equipment multichannel analysers, used in theday-to-day function of the laboratory.

Toreconstitute and prepare calibration and quality control material used on theanalysers to ensure results are accurate and precise.

Toparticipate in and understand the quality assurance programs of the department,both internal and external NEQAS (National External Quality AssuranceSchemes) and ensure appropriate corrective measures are taken whenevernecessary.

Toobserve all departmental, Trust, national and European Health & Safetyregulations relevant to the service, ensuring attendance at the annualdepartmental H&S update. In addition all staff must sign the departmentalH&S policy to acknowledge understanding and compliance.

Tocontinually update their knowledge and skills whilst documenting this in theirPersonal Professional Portfolio.

Toensure contemporaneous completion of your induction and training records andthose of Band 5 Biomedical Scientists and support staff in your section.

Tomaintain ongoing specialist training and an awareness of current developmentsin your field.

Tocommunicate with other health care professionals in transmission and inresponse to telephone enquiries relating to results and the service.

Withinthe department carry out pre-analytical preparation of specimens for analysis.

Toassist senior colleagues in the maintenance of adequate stocks of reagents andconsumables to ensure continuous service provision.

Tobe proactive in updating and generation of SOPs

To work independentlyfollowing SOPs and policies; asks for technical and clinical advice whennecessary

Toattend meetings and training courses as necessary.

Toattend Statutory and Essential Update Training annually.

Toattend departmental briefings and/or acquaint yourself with the team briefposted on the departmental notice boards.

Toassist in the maintenance and compilation of workload statistics.

Toassist in the process of continual quality improvement. This will includeaudit, corrective action, preventative action and improvement processes.

Toparticipate in an annual IPR and achieve any targets set at this time.

Toparticipate in the training of Biomedical Scientists, Trainee BiomedicalScientists and new staff.

Toassist senior staff in the supervision of Band 5 Biomedical Scientists, TraineeBiomedical Scientists and Assistant Technical Officers.

Toassist in audit carried out by internal and external agencies.

Torotate through sections of the Combined Laboratory as required.

Subjectto the principle statement of employment, or within the local agreementspertaining to 24/7 provision, participate in this service.

Participatein all clinical trials; income generation schemes within the department; anyresearch & development undertaken by the department, including samplepreparation, analysis and collating data as necessary.

Undertakework from any source commensurate with the knowledge and skills of a specialistBiomedical Scientist.

Atthe direction of senior departmental staff undertake work from any sourcecommensurate with the knowledge and skills of a state registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist.

Implementnew technology and working practices when required, due to changingcircumstances.

Activelyassist senior staff in the implementation of new techniques and methodologies.

Ensureissues and problems are resolved satisfactorily and referred through your linemanagement structure as appropriate.

Supervisethe conduct of staff in respect of timekeeping, behaviour and safety.Initially, work with senior staff to resolve any problems in these areas.

Coverfor senior staff and be prepared to work on your own when necessary.

Ability to demonstrate and apply knowledge of the Pathology of disease in one or more disciplines within DCL Ability to perform all assays relevant to the section in which you work irrespective of their complexity An understanding of the meaning of results to enable authorisation and appropriate action in dealing with abnormal or unusual results A working knowledge and practical application of the departments IT systems Knowledge of all H&S issues, relating to the laboratory activity including national and European directives. Post registration experience in relevant section of a Laboratory within a Department which handles a total workload of 200000 patient requests per annum. Knowledge and competency based evidence of specialist techniques within the discipline the post holder is expected to work or completed IBMS Specialist Portfolio / BSHI diploma A current Personal Professional Portfolio demonstrating Participation in Continual Professional Development (CPD) A demonstrable ability in problem solving and taking ownership of problems

Desirable

Participation in the Institute of Biomedical Sciences CPD scheme ECDL or equivalent Trust training course in problem solving

Qualifications

Essential

Educated to BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or a degree acceptable to the Institute of Biomedical Sciences and the Health and Care Professions Council. The latter will require completion of a Post Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Sciences. Those holding a Certificate of Competence will require a successfully completed IBMS Specialist Portfolio/BSHI diploma. State registration with Health Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist.
