Are you looking for career in Emergency Medicine in a large UK teaching hospital with a Major Trauma Centre? Do you have ED NHS experience in a training post/clinical fellow post?

The Emergency Department at Nottingham University Hospitals' NHS Trust is excited to be able to offer opportunities for motivated doctors to join our friendly Emergency Medicine team for a 12 month period from 3rd December 2024, or earlier.

You will have the opportunity to work in a forward thinking, dynamic department which is committed to the Trust's ambition of developing staff and delivering outstanding healthcare outcomes for patients.

Depending on your experience, you will be appointed to a Junior Fellow role on our Tier 2 rota (equivalent to CT1, or CT2) or on our Tier 3 rota (CT3 level).

We are only able to accept applications from candidates who are currently working in ED in the NHS or have ED NHS experience of 6 months or more at some point in your career (please note a clinical attachment will not be classed as NHS experience and your application will not be sent for shortlisting)

Main duties of the job

Working in our ED encompasses many management skills such as managing the shop floor, keeping to the four hour target and constant reprioritisation of tasks.

You will be supported to work through competencies to develop portfolio evidence to meet your set objectives and will work under the clinical direction of EM Consultants who are present in the department 24/7. All Fellows will have a monthly teaching day along with educational development time reflected on your rota. You will be allocated an Educational and Clinical supervisor

NUH consists of the Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) and the Nottingham City Hospital Campuses. QMC houses our Emergency Department which has co-located adult and children's units. NUH is the Major Trauma Centre for the East Midlands region.

Our forward thinking, research active Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Europe with 195,000 new attendances annually. The Children's ED sees 44,000 children and young people and has expanded its resuscitation capability with a major capital investment.

What do we expect from a candidate?

We expect you to have at least two years post MBBS (or equivalent) in addition to experience in an Emergency Department (ED) You will need at least six months experience in ED in the NHS ( please note, clinical attachment does not fulfill this criteria and you will not be shortlisted if you only have an attachment in the NHS ) You will be an ALS provider (ALS in date) Able to show a good standard of written English For you to have an interest in working in Emergency Medicine and be able to demonstrate this

This is a service post so does not have educational approval, but you will be provided with excellent training and educational opportunities, tailored to meet your individual needs.

We expect that you will keep yourself up to date with current knowledge and practice, attend clinical meetings within the department and to participate in audit and in service training of other professionals.

Clinical Fellows in the Emergency Department can expect to:

Build on previous experience and develop increased expertise in the identification, assessment and management of sick patients Gain experience and familiarity in identifying and managing a wide variety of medical conditions, with appropriated decision making around need for admission and discharge +/- primary care/specialty follow up Gain experience and familiarity in managing poly-trauma patients and the concept of silver trauma Have opportunities to acquire additional skills such as fascia iliaca block, chest drain etc To enhance your communication skills with patients relatives and colleagues To keep up to date with mandatory training required for your role To participate in the annual appraisal process
