Nottingham, Nottingham, United Kingdom Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trusts Full time

Position Overview

Are you looking to advance your career as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) within the Emergency Medicine sector?

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is recognized as one of the leading teaching hospitals in Europe, boasting a well-established ACP service.

With a current workforce of 200 qualified and trainee ACPs across various specialties, including 52 in the Emergency Department, we are eager to welcome dedicated, passionate, and empathetic professionals to our Emergency Medicine team. Our aim is to provide exceptional care to our patients, and we offer structured career pathways for qualified ACPs across the different pillars of advanced clinical practice.

In collaboration with local universities, we invite healthcare professionals to join us as apprentice trainee ACPs. Candidates must possess registration with a professional body (NMC, HCPC, or equivalent), hold a GCSE in Mathematics and English (grade A*-C or equivalent), and have a UK degree with a minimum classification of 2:2 or a degree with a comparability statement at Level 6 or 7 (UK ENIC) if obtained from a non-UK institution. Additionally, candidates should be prepared to undertake the Non-Medical Prescribing course. Successful applicants will embark on the Level 7 ACP apprenticeship training pathway at the University of Nottingham.

We also encourage applications from trainee ACPs who are currently in training and wish to transition to our established ACP training pathway.

Main Responsibilities

For comprehensive details regarding the responsibilities associated with this position, please refer to the job description and person specification attached to the advertisement.

Our Emergency Department serves as the primary trauma center in the region and is among the busiest emergency departments in Europe, treating over 170,000 patients annually.

Within this department, we have a nationally recognized and well-structured ACP service.

The team comprises 52 qualified and trainee ACPs who operate across both adult and pediatric emergency departments, and we are currently seeking exceptional individuals to join our adult ACP team.

Your professional development will be thoroughly supported by our extensive ACP team and senior medical staff, and this support continues even after qualification.

We have a well-defined post-graduation plan aligned with the Royal College of Emergency Medicine accreditation competencies, encompassing all aspects of advanced practice.

About Us

As one of the largest employers in the city, with over 19,000 staff members, we play a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of our local community. Our institution is at the forefront of research, education, and innovation.

Join our dedicated team at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, where we value diversity and welcome fresh perspectives to enhance our service delivery to the diverse patient populations we serve. With numerous opportunities for personal and professional development, we are committed to transforming your role into a fulfilling career.

We particularly encourage applications from individuals who identify as Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic, or Disabled, as we strive for improved representation within our workforce.

Job Responsibilities

For a detailed overview of the responsibilities associated with this role, please refer to the job description and person specification attached to the advertisement.

We are also interested in hearing from ACP trainees who are currently progressing through their ACP MSc training and are seeking to transition to a supported and established ACP training pathway.

Successful candidates for these adult trainee ACP positions will undertake the Advanced Clinical Practice MSc as apprentices at The University of Nottingham, following our established three-year ACP training pathway, which includes:

  1. Year 1: Appointed as a band 6, working within the trainee's designated role in the department (nurse/physiotherapist/pharmacist). The trainee will be allocated 15 hours per week to complete Year 1 of the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice.
  2. Year 2: Upon successful completion of Year 1, the trainee will transition to a full-time supernumerary trainee ACP role, commencing work-based learning and non-medical prescribing modules. Supernumerary trainees will receive dedicated consultant supervision, competency sign-off, mentorship, and structured teaching, facilitating the completion of the work-based learning competency portfolio. Following the completion of non-medical prescribing and a portion of the portfolio, trainees will be promoted to band 7 after an appraisal.
  3. Year 3: After successfully completing Year 2 modules and the portfolio, trainees will undertake a VIVA. Upon completion, they will transition onto the rota with a supervisory period. Once all final assessments and modules are completed, the trainee will advance to a band 8a qualified ACP.

Once qualified, in addition to clinical responsibilities across the department, individuals will have designated time for continued professional development and service enhancement. They will have the opportunity to pursue personal interests in areas such as education, teaching, research, or management.

This is a unique opportunity for a motivated and dedicated individual to build a career in advanced clinical practice. If you are looking to further your career in the NHS within Emergency Medicine while remaining at the forefront of patient care, we look forward to your application.
