Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and dynamic professional to join our well-established paediatric diabetes nursing team. The Paediatric Diabetes Service at Barts Health currently manages over 700 children and young people with diabetes. We offer specialsit service providing expert management of complex Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes in childhood and adolescence, rare forms of monogenic diabetes and neonatal diabetes. Our multidisciplinary diabetes team provides a service for children and young people aged 0-19 years. The post holder will be a key member of the multidisciplinary team in ensuring achievement of the best practice tariff for paediatric diabetes.

For this band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist post you must have 5 years post registration children’s experience and have a minimum of 2 years as a paediatric diabetes nurse specialist with extensive knowledge of diabetes gained from relevant post-basic study and experience. You should also have proven management skills and be able to demonstrate effective teaching and presentation skills. A teaching qualification and an understanding of training and development initiatives in diabetes would be desirable.

The successful applicant would be involved in coordinating care for children and young people with diabetes and their families, from diagnosis through to our comprehensive transition programme, both in the acute and community settings across East London. You will work closely with the children’s wards at our three sites (The Royal London Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital and Newham Hospital), as well as schools/colleges and community teams throughout. The post holder will have the opportunity to build upon existing knowledge and skills, learning strategies to help young people struggling with their diabetes; expand on knowledge of intensive insulin regimens and advance their own nursing practice. The post holder will have proven management skills and ability to lead a team and will take the lead for the delivery of nursing care for one of the hospital sites.

Main duties of the job

The Paediatric Diabetes service will deliver a seamless service and provide the highest level of expert nursing care to children and young people with diabetes, and their families, in line with agreed standards.

The post holder will assist in the continued development of the Paediatric Diabetes service and work in close conjunction with their Manager and the named Paediatricians for Endocrinology. 

The post holder will ensure that the aims and objectives of the Paediatric Diabetes service are delivered and implemented to continually improve the standard of care that children receive.

The post holder will be an advocate for children and young people with diabetes, and their families, promoting child focussed, family centred care and act as a resource for the multi-agency team.

 The post holder will have knowledge of the Senior CAG management team and the development of the strategic plan for the Paediatric Diabetes service, taking into account the continuous quality improvement programme, to ensure the delivery of an efficient and cost-effective service in line with Best Practice Tariff.
