London, United Kingdom West London NHS Trust Full time

Job overview

The Deputy Chief Medical Officer role is a significant opportunity to develop a key leadership role, and will be pivotal to culture and medical management in our diverse Trust. The Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) will work collaboratively with the Chief Medical Officer to provide leadership to specific high profile areas, and medical leadership more generally.

The post provides the breadth of experience in professional and corporate areas that could lead to further progression and career development, and is a potential step towards a CMO role. The DCMO will agree a balanced medical leadership portfolio that will provide exceptional experience in corporate medical leadership, across a diverse Mental Health and Community Trust, and in the wider system. They will chair Trust wide groups, and will be a visible, respected and key senior clinical leader for example, as the Trust’s Caldicott Guardian.

The role results from increased investment in clinical and medical leadership, at a time of service development, and further expansion such as in medical education, and into the wider Integrated Care System.

The ideal candidate is a medical leader who wishes to develop further. They will have and continue to develop the credibility, clarity of thinking, resilience and breadth of ability to lead in complex clinical and organisational situations with compassion, and knowledge.

Closing Date: 5th June 2024

Stakeholder Panel: 12th June 2024

Interviews: 13th June 2024

Main duties of the job

The Medical Directorate provides strategic leadership to medical management on issues such as medical development, recruitment, retention, and Job Planning. The DCMO will work with the CMO on these medical professional issues, as co-chair of the Senior Medical Managers Meeting, and lead on agreed medical professional areas of priority and interest.

The CMO leads on medical disciplinary matters. The DCMO will therefore gain relevant experience as agreed, and as a medical appraiser. They will train to become a Case Investigator and Case Manager for disciplinary matters with the support of the CMO.

The portfolio includes being the Caldicott Guardian, and as such the DCMO is co-chair of the Information Governance Steering Group. They chair trust wide groups such as Medicines Optimisation Group, Mortality Review Group, and are corporate lead for Clinical Audit and NICE on behalf of the CMO.

The DCMO role has 8 programmed activities and additional PA’s can be agreed in a clinical service. The post includes on-call responsibilities. This will be considered as part of the personal development plan and in most instances the DCMO will join or work towards joining the Executive On-call rota. The post holder will be supported with their development by the CMO and through their appraisal, development plan and supervision. They are encouraged to undertake leadership training if desired.
