Chief Medical Officer Leadership Opportunity

The Deputy Chief Medical Officer position offers a unique chance to develop a key leadership role, significantly contributing to the culture and medical management of our diverse Trust. This strategic role will work collaboratively with the Chief Medical Officer to provide direction to specific high-profile areas and medical leadership more broadly.
This opportunity provides the breadth of experience in professional and corporate domains that can lead to further progression and career development, potentially serving as a step towards a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) role. The Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) will agree on a balanced medical leadership portfolio offering exceptional experience in corporate medical leadership across a diverse Mental Health and Community Trust, as well as within the wider system.
The post is the result of increased investment in clinical and medical leadership at a time of service development and expansion, including medical education and integration into the Integrated Care System.
We seek a medical leader who wishes to further develop their skills. They should possess and continue to cultivate credibility, clarity of thought, resilience, and a broad range of abilities to lead in complex clinical and organizational situations with compassion and knowledge.
Main Responsibilities- The Medical Directorate provides strategic leadership to medical management, addressing issues such as medical development, recruitment, retention, and Job Planning. The DCMO will collaborate with the CMO on these matters, co-chairing the Senior Medical Managers Meeting and leading on agreed medical professional areas of priority and interest.
- The CMO leads on medical disciplinary matters. The DCMO will gain relevant experience and train to become a Case Investigator and Case Manager for disciplinary cases under the guidance of the CMO.
The Deputy Chief Medical Officer's portfolio includes serving as the Caldicott Guardian and co-chairing the Information Governance Steering Group. They will chair trust-wide groups such as the Medicines Optimisation Group, Mortality Review Group, and serve as the corporate lead for Clinical Audit and NICE on behalf of the CMO.
This role includes eight programmed activities, and additional duties may be agreed upon in a clinical service. On-call responsibilities are also part of this position, which will be considered as part of the personal development plan. Typically, the DCMO will join or contribute to the Executive On-call rota. The post holder will receive support for their development from the CMO through regular appraisals, development plans, and supervision. Opportunities for leadership training are encouraged.
