Main duties of the job

The ED team at Royal Blackburn are looking to recruit Care Support Workers to join our busy team.

We are a very busy department, covering a very diverse population, and we are also a major trauma unit.

We cover Burnley Urgent Care Centre, Accrington Minor Injuries Unit along with the ED and Urgent Care Centre at Blackburn.

We are looking for self-motivated Support Workers help take the department forward – you must be committed, flexible and approachable.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are expected.

You must be able to work a variety of shifts including days nights and weekends.

We value experience and skills learnt elsewhere and will work with you to enable those skills, to be utilised and developed further.

You will be supported by a team of Matrons, Senior Sisters, and Practice educators. There will be the opportunity for further study.

Working for our organisation

Our Emergency Department at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital provides care for both adults and children who attend with serious illness or injury. Due to our large catchment area, we currently provide for approximately 154,000 attendees per year. The department has an 8 bedded resuscitation and 43 major cubicles.

The department is classified as a trauma unit and we have a purpose built helipad onsite that will bring our most serious patients to the department via North West Air Ambulance.

We have a new, state of the art staff facility for staff changing with access to a shower as well as a new staff room, education room and wellbeing retreat for all staff.

We also have 2 Urgent Care Centres that are part of the emergency department and 2 Minor Injuries Units which are located at Accrington Victoria Hospital and Rossendale Health Centre.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse provide care to the highest attainable standard as an effective member of the clinical team, in accordance with agreed Nursing Practice.
Assist in undressing of patients in preparation for examination procedures,
maintaining patient dignity and respect at all times.
Assist with the cleaning/disinfecting of bed/trolleys/lockers in accordance with Infection Control Policies, including the making of beds & trolleys.
Undertake safe transfer and escort of patients as directed by the Healthcare Professional.
Ensure safe moving and positioning of patients including the use of mechanical aids and bed appliances.
Assist patients with all aspects of personal hygiene, under supervision.
Assist patients to use toilet facilities including commodes, toilet utensils etc.
Assist in the care of pressure areas and the care of the incontinent patient.
Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
Inform staff immediately of any concerns regarding patients condition.
Have a workable knowledge of the general and specific infection control measures and related issues.
Participate in the Major Incident Procedure within the Trust guidelines.
Check, clean and ensure all equipment prior to admission / discharge is in good working order e.g. linen, oxygen suction, resuscitation equipment, replace as required in consultation with senior staff, also replace oxygen cylinders on trolleys as required.
Ensure that day – to - day stock levels are maintained e.g. linen and clinical
equipment. Order and replace as appropriate.
Store all supplies and equipment, and report any discrepancies.
Assist in the cleaning of clinical areas and equipment, ensuring that the area is clear of potential hazards, removing soiled linen, clinical waste and contaminated items to relevant collection areas.

Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria
  • Grade D/Grade 3 in GCSE English and Maths or equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ level 2 in care Familiar with Organisation computer systems
  • Minimum 6 months previous experience in a Health care setting
