Position Overview

ROLE SUMMARY

The Endoscopy Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible for delivering exceptional patient care in accordance with established professional standards, while maintaining accountability for individual patient needs and promoting autonomy.

This role requires the demonstration of leadership qualities that foster effective collaboration within the healthcare team.

Contribute to innovative clinical practices and assist in the implementation of nursing policies aligned with both National and Local healthcare strategies.

Support the service's operational needs and engage in professional development across various clinical settings.

Key Responsibilities

1. Organize and manage the reception, admission, transfer, and nurse-led discharge processes for patients.

2. Evaluate, plan, implement, and assess care programs within the specialty as a designated nurse, demonstrating a high level of skill proficiency to assist during a wide range of diagnostic, therapeutic, and complex endoscopic procedures.

3. Participate in the decontamination of endoscopic instruments, ensuring adherence to infection control protocols and staying updated on current best practices to minimize risks to patients and staff.

4. Create a secure environment for both patients and staff, ensuring that patient dignity is preserved at all times.

5. Maintain accurate documentation, including care pathway records, brief/debrief notes, and electronic health records.

6. Assist in the investigation of incidents and accidents involving patients, visitors, or staff, and engage in the clinical incident reporting process.

7. Exhibit advanced knowledge of endoscopic and specialized equipment, understanding the function and application of all endoscopes and systems, as well as potential malfunctions and hazards associated with endoscopic tools and substances.

8. Support and coordinate the cleaning of clinical areas and equipment, ensuring a hazard-free environment.

Professional Development

1. Engage in continuous professional development by enhancing knowledge in line with the NMC's code of professional conduct and participating in ongoing research and learning initiatives within the department, sharing insights with junior staff.

2. Contribute to the implementation of clinical practices that comply with Trust and departmental policies, procedures, standards, guidelines, and protocols, providing support to senior staff.

3. Collaborate with medical and support staff to address care-related challenges and execute treatments as directed to ensure quality patient care.

4. Advocate for and facilitate change to meet the evolving needs of the service, remaining informed about local and national healthcare agendas.

5. Manage inventory levels of clinical supplies and equipment.

6. Assist in addressing complaints from patients, relatives, and staff, informing management of any significant incidents and participating in the clinical incident reporting process.

7. Delegate patient care responsibilities to junior staff members effectively.

Clinical Governance

Communication

1. Communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and colleagues through various channels to ensure smooth service operations, particularly in complex and sensitive situations involving patients with special needs.

2. Collaborate and share sensitive information regarding patients' medical conditions with multidisciplinary team members.

3. Participate in regular staff and unit meetings to enhance team communication.

4. Ensure that critical information regarding patients' physical conditions is communicated to the appropriate personnel, acting as a liaison between the unit and other departments.

5. Maintain professionalism during challenging emotional situations involving patients, relatives, and visitors.

Education and Development

1. Attend mandatory training sessions and reviews as per local policy.

2. Engage in performance reviews and work towards achieving set objectives.

3. Contribute to service development by analyzing and reflecting on professional experiences to enhance personal and team practices.

4. Act as an assessor and mentor for learners, supporting practitioners in their roles as co-mentors/assessors.

5. Lead or participate in training and educational programs.

6. Actively engage in relevant groups and working parties to foster professional and individual development while meeting service requirements.

7. Supervise junior staff clinically and conduct appraisals as necessary.

8. Support the Charge Nurse in managing staff absence and HR processes when required.

Health and Safety

1. Adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines for self and others.

2. Avoid the misuse or interference with equipment provided for health and safety purposes.

3. Promptly report any hazards or defects encountered.

4. Report accidents or incidents as soon as possible and ensure proper documentation is completed.

5. Actively participate as a departmental representative in health and safety matters.
