Position Overview

The Senior Clinical Consultant role is a pivotal leadership position within the organization, reporting directly to the Divisional Directors of Operations and Nursing, while also maintaining professional and clinical accountability to the Chief Nurse and Medical Director.

This position will encompass four primary functions as outlined by the multi-professional framework for consultant practice:

The post holder will continue to engage in clinical practice at a consultant level within their specialty, ensuring the maintenance of clinical expertise and credibility. They will operate independently and autonomously, managing a diverse range of clientele within their portfolio. This expert clinical practice will also support the broader objectives of their role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide autonomous, expert clinical assessments and treatments for a designated patient caseload, administering complex assessments to develop comprehensive care plans across various conditions and co-morbidities.
  • Utilize advanced clinical reasoning and decision-making skills, integrating best practices and research evidence to synthesize clinical opinions from a multidisciplinary team, aiming to deliver effective and efficient integrated care.
  • Establish integrated care pathways for individuals over 18 years of age, collaborating with external health and social care partners to demonstrate the impact of these pathways and share best practices on a national and international scale.
  • Leverage in-depth knowledge of the roles and responsibilities within the multidisciplinary clinical team to enhance the development of efficient care pathways.

As the healthcare landscape evolves to meet the needs of patients with complex requirements, we are dedicated to ensuring equitable access to services, allowing patients to receive care in their preferred environments. This approach aims to reduce hospital admissions, thereby creating capacity within our facilities and emergency departments.

The Intensive Home Support Service operates as an integrated multidisciplinary team, available 24/7 through various shift patterns, supported by a dedicated Intermediate Care Allocation Team comprising social care coordinators and other health and social care professionals.

Job Responsibilities

In alignment with the Multi-professional consultant-level practice capability and impact framework, the post holder will establish values-based professional practices across pathways, services, organizations, and systems, engaging with individuals, families, caregivers, and communities. They will influence the development of cohesive healthcare systems at local, regional, and national levels, guided by the four pillars of practice.

The Senior Clinical Consultant will play a crucial role in nurturing staff potential, transforming the workforce, and acting as a key resource for promoting cultural change and interdisciplinary learning. They will support continuous learning and improvement to foster excellence within the organization.

Additionally, the post holder will cultivate a knowledge-rich environment that contributes to nationally and internationally recognized research outputs, positively impacting development, quality, innovation, and system effectiveness.

As a strategic consultant practitioner, the incumbent will establish expertise across the system, utilizing consultancy approaches that maximize impact on practice, services, communities, and populations, while enhancing workforce capacity and capability.

A job plan will be established to meet the needs of the service and role, detailing the ratio of contracted hours dedicated to direct patient care versus time allocated for professional activities and service development, with annual reviews or more frequent assessments as necessary.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Professional Registration with either the NMC or HCPC.
  • Professional knowledge acquired through a degree in nursing or allied health professions.
