Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, well-motivated individual to join our Therapy Team at the Royal Derby Hospital. If you have a passion for working with Elderly people and would like develop your Therapy skills working with patients who have conditions such as Dementia, Parkinson's Disease and Falls, you need look no further

You will be working under the supervision of qualified Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy staff to undertake a variety of tasks assisting in the treatment of patients activities of daily living, functional, mobility and respiratory problems.

There will be a number of non-clinical duties such as clerical or housekeeping tasks, which aids the efficient running of the department. You will be an excellent communicator, team player and have a basic working knowledge of IT packages.

Must be able to motivate/persuade patients to comply with treatment programmes where there may be significant barriers to understanding such as dementing illness, cognitive impairment, hearing or sight impairment and memory loss, dysphasia, cultural/language barriers or have behavioural problems, mental illness, depression, aggression - from their patients or their carers. Communication will require use of a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools in order to gain a successful treatment outcome.

Main duties of the job

To work under the supervision and direction of the qualified staff in the performance of specific tasks for an individual or group of patients, as part of their treatment and rehabilitation programmes. Such tasks may include; assisting the patients with functional activities of daily living, including dressing/undressing, domestic activities, supervising exercises, preparing patients for treatment, assisting patients to increase their independence by using daily living aids.

To be aware at all times of the needs of patients during illness or disability and to promote and encourage independence and restoration of function

To be able to recognise the need to refer back to the Physiotherapist / Occupational Therapist, identifying contra-indications to treatment and signs of deterioration and communicate with the Therapists accordingly.

To be able to communicate effectively with patients to gain informed consent to treatment. Assess patient's understanding of treatment proposals and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.

Must maintain accurate, comprehensive and up to date treatment notes in line with legal and departmental requirements for each patient.

Experience working with the elderly in community or care setting

Knowledge/ awareness of medical conditions, knowledge of therapy equipment NVQ in healthcare topic Previous experience working as a therapy assistant at band 2 level

English and maths at GCSE level or equivalent Basic IT skills, flexible and adaptable, good time management, Knowledge and experience of manual handling skills
