Research Fellow in Quantum Technologies Development
1 month ago
About the Role
The primary objective of this position is to experimentally develop prototype silicon quantum devices using two distinct approaches: qubit identification within random dopant networks and measurement-based entanglement. This requires collaboration with a UCL team of researchers with expertise in dopant device fabrication, materials characterization, and high-frequency quantum measurements, as well as a network of external collaborators.
Key research activities include operating and maintaining an ultra-high vacuum scanning tunnelling microscope (STM), using the STM for hydrogen resist lithography to precision-place dopants in silicon for quantum device fabrication, post-processing samples using cleanroom techniques including electron beam lithography, and characterizing the structural and chemical composition of the devices.
About You
The successful candidate will hold a PhD degree in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with a proven track record of publications in leading scientific journals.
They will have experience in operating a variable temperature scanning tunnelling microscope and other scanning probe techniques, fabricating atomic-scale dopant in silicon nanoscale devices in an ultra-high vacuum chamber, and using electron beam lithography, reactive ion etching, and metal evaporation in a cleanroom environment.
They will also have demonstrated competence in training other PhD students and Research Fellows in hydrogen resist lithography and STM device fabrication skills, and be able to present technical information effectively to a range of audiences.
What We Offer
In addition to the exciting opportunities this role presents, we offer a range of benefits, including:
- 41 days' holiday (27 days annual leave, 8 bank holidays, and 6 closure days)
- Additional 5 days' annual leave purchase scheme
- Defined benefit career average revalued earnings pension scheme (CARE)

- Immigration loan
- Relocation scheme for certain posts
- On-Site nursery
- On-site gym
- Enhanced maternity, paternity, and adoption pay
- Employee assistance programme: Staff Support Service
