London, Greater London, United Kingdom UCL Eastman Dental Institute Full time

About the Opportunity

The role involves experimental development of prototype dopant-in-silicon quantum devices using two independent approaches: qubit identification within random dopant networks, and measurement-based entanglement. Collaboration is required with a UCL team of researchers with complementary expertise in dopant device fabrication, materials characterisation, and high-frequency quantum measurements, as well as a network of external collaborators. The focus of this post is on the sample fabrication aspect of the project.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Operate and maintain an ultra-high vacuum scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) for hydrogen resist lithography and precision placement of dopants in silicon to make quantum devices.
  2. Post-process samples using cleanroom techniques, including electron beam lithography.
  3. Characterise the structural and chemical composition of devices.

About You

The successful candidate will have a PhD degree (or be about to submit) in Physics, Material Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, along with a proven track record of publications in leading scientific journals. They will have experience of operating a variable temperature scanning tunnelling microscope and other scanning probe techniques, fabricating atomic-scale dopant in silicon nanoscale devices, and using electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching in a cleanroom environment.

What We Offer

UCL offers a range of benefits, including 41 days' holiday, an additional 5 days' annual leave purchase scheme, a defined benefit career average revalued earnings pension scheme, and access to a cycle to work scheme and season ticket loan.
