Quantum Technologies Research Fellow in Silicon Development
2 weeks ago
About the Role
The primary objective of this position is to experimentally develop prototype dopant-in-silicon quantum devices using two independent approaches: (i) qubit identification within random dopant networks, and (ii) measurement-based entanglement. This requires collaboration with a UCL team of researchers with complementary expertise in dopant device fabrication, materials characterisation, and high-frequency quantum measurements, as well as a network of external collaborators. The focus of this advertised post is on the sample fabrication aspect of the project.
Key Responsibilities
- Operation and maintenance of an ultra-high vacuum scanning tunnelling microscope (STM)
- Use of the STM to perform hydrogen resist lithography for the precision placement of dopants in silicon to make quantum devices
- Post-processing of the sample using cleanroom techniques, including electron beam lithography
- Subsequent characterisation of the structural and chemical composition of the devices
About You
The successful candidate will have a PhD degree (or be about to submit) in Physics, Material Science, Electrical Engineering or a related field, along with a proven track record of publications in leading scientific journals.
They will have experience of: operating a variable temperature scanning tunnelling microscope, and more than one other scanning probe technique (AFM, KPFM, e-AFM); fabricating atomic-scale dopant in silicon nanoscale devices in an ultra-high vacuum chamber, and of using electron beam lithography, reactive ion etching, metal evaporation in a cleanroom environment.
They will also have demonstrated competence in training other PhD students and Research Fellows to perform hydrogen resist lithography and STM device fabrication skills, and be able to present technical information effectively to a range of audiences.
What We Offer
As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer some great benefits, including:
- 41 Days holiday (27 days annual leave, 8 bank holiday and 6 closure days)
- Additional 5 days' annual leave purchase scheme
- Defined benefit career average revalued earnings pension scheme (CARE)
- Cycle to work scheme and season ticket loan
- Immigration loan
- Relocation scheme for certain posts
- On-Site nursery
- On-site gym
- Enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption pay
- Employee assistance programme: Staff Support Service
- Discounted medical insurance
