About the Role

The successful candidate will be working in the Radiation Safety Section of the Medical Physics Department, primarily based at the Guy's Hospital site. However, they will also be completing work assignments at other Trust locations and for external contracts.

As a member of the Radiation Safety team, the post holder will be responsible for ensuring the quality, safety, and effectiveness of the use of radiation on patients in healthcare. This will involve providing advice and support on a wide range of techniques, including X-rays, radioisotopes, lasers, and microwaves.

The team's aim is to ensure that the Trust and external clients follow relevant legislation and guidelines. The post holder will have the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in areas such as laser safety, personal dosimetry, equipment calibration, and sealed and unsealed radioactive source work.

Training will be provided in all of these areas, with the scope of the role expanding as training proceeds. The post holder will be well supported in working towards clinical scientist registration, with both route 2 and in-service STP routes available.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out X-ray equipment testing on a full range of X-ray imaging systems.
  • Develop skills and knowledge in laser safety, personal dosimetry, equipment calibration, and sealed and unsealed radioactive source work.
  • Work towards clinical scientist registration with route 2 or in-service STP routes.

Person Specification

Knowledge/Qualifications

  • Good (1st or 2nd class) undergraduate Honours degree in a relevant pure or applied science.

Experience

  • Working knowledge or experience of the techniques employed to measure the performance and radiological safety of standard X-ray imaging equipment.
  • Working knowledge of how to measure the leakage from sealed radioactive sources.

Skills

  • Broad understanding of patient and staff risks from ionising and laser radiation.
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines (IRMER 2017, ISO 9001, Medical and Dental Guidance Notes).
