Radiation Safety Physicist Trainee

Job Summary
Our Medical Physics Department provides scientific and technical support to various clinical and laboratory services within the Trust and external clients. We offer a wide range of advice and support in applying physical science and engineering to healthcare techniques. The post holder will be well-supported in pursuing clinical scientist registration through route 2 or in-service STP trainee routes.
Main Duties
The post holder will work in the Radiation Safety Section of the Medical Physics Department, primarily based at Guy's Hospital site, but may complete work assignments at other Trust locations and external contracts. The Radiation Safety team ensures the quality, safety, and effectiveness of radiation use in healthcare. This involves providing advice and support on X-rays, radioisotopes, lasers, and microwaves, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and guidelines.

Job Responsibilities
The post holder will be trained to carry out X-ray equipment testing on various X-ray imaging systems. They will have opportunities to develop skills and knowledge in laser safety, personal dosimetry, equipment calibration, and sealed and unsealed radioactive source work. Training will be provided in these areas, with the scope of the role expanding as training proceeds.
Person Specification
Knowledge/Qualifications
- Good undergraduate Honours degree in a relevant pure or applied science
Experience
- Working knowledge or experience of X-ray imaging equipment performance and radiological safety
- Working knowledge of sealed radioactive source leakage measurement
Skills
- Broad understanding of patient and staff risks from ionising and laser radiation
- Working knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, and professional guidelines
- Able to deliver teaching and training on complex subjects
