About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Software Engineer to join our team at EMBL-EBI, responsible for designing, developing, and operating high-throughput pipelines to support scientists worldwide in ingesting, processing, persisting, and distributing high volumes of sequence data.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with our development and operational teams, EBI's IT and Technical services teams, and the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC) to ensure seamless data processing and distribution.
  • Develop and maintain large-scale databases, workflow management systems, and distributed data processing software using Java, Spring framework, Hadoop, Spark, and Oracle.
  • Work with a team of professionals with diverse skills and backgrounds to achieve common goals.
  • Apply modern software development practices, including continuous integration and deployment, testing principles, and system monitoring.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of professional software development experience using Java and Spring framework.
  • Experience with workflow management systems, distributed data processing software, and large-scale databases.
  • Excellent knowledge of the UNIX command line and ability to work in a multidisciplinary scientific environment.
  • Experience with sequence data and formats (FASTQ, BAM, CRAM, SRA) is a plus.

What We Offer

  • Contract duration: 3 years
  • Grading: 5 or 6 depending on qualification and experience
  • Monthly salary starting at £3,229 or £3,612 after tax, plus benefits
