Position Overview

This role is situated within the Neurorehabilitation department at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The appointed candidate will deliver a specialized Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) service to adults experiencing communication and/or swallowing challenges due to neurological impairments. The Team Lead will oversee the daily operations of the Neurorehabilitation SLT team, ensuring effective leadership and support.

Key Responsibilities

The inpatient services focus on providing comprehensive multidisciplinary neurorehabilitation for adults with complex acquired brain injuries, including but not limited to head and spinal injuries, strokes, and progressive neurological conditions. This position presents significant opportunities for professional growth within the specialty, facilitated by collaborative relationships across various disciplines and within the SLT department.

Clinical Duties

  • Manage an independent caseload for the Neurorehabilitation service, which encompasses assessment, differential diagnosis, and specialized SLT management for patients with acquired communication and swallowing disorders, adhering to established evidence-based guidelines.
  • Contribute expert input into the development of policies and protocols concerning patient management within the Speech and Language Therapy Neurorehabilitation team.
  • Serve as a liaison among all SLTs involved in patient care, ensuring that treatment is provided by the most suitable therapist and that knowledge and resources are effectively shared across the service.
  • Collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary team in Neurorehabilitation to assess, plan, and implement rehabilitation goals and programs, while negotiating discharge arrangements as necessary.
  • Coordinate and promote communication advancements under the guidance of a senior therapist, addressing mental capacity act issues, and developing training on supporting communication.
  • Act as Rehabilitation Coordinator when appropriate.
  • Deliver complex and sensitive clinical information to patients and caregivers in a clear, accessible, and empathetic manner, both verbally and in writing.
  • Participate in instrumental assessments and assist in the training and supervision of other SLT staff in these evaluations as needed.
  • Introduce and train patients, their families, and staff on the use of low and high-tech communication aids, or refer to the communication aid therapist as necessary.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • BSc or recognized postgraduate MSc or diploma in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council.
  • Postgraduate training in dysphagia management.

Desirable

  • Membership in RCSLT.
  • Completion of leadership and management training courses.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Extensive experience in adult acquired brain injury rehabilitation, including managing a diverse caseload and employing various assessment and therapy techniques.
  • Experience in specialist assessment and differential diagnosis with a complex patient population.
  • Proficiency in risk identification and management, including multidisciplinary collaboration and decision-making.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with communication aids and computer-based communication therapy programs.
  • Experience presenting at Clinical Excellence Networks or involvement in CEN committees.

Skills and Competencies

Essential

  • Highly motivated with demonstrated leadership capabilities in a clinical setting.
  • Skills in clinical supervision and line management.
  • Able to work collaboratively at a senior level with other professionals and agencies.
  • Ability to design and implement specialized treatment plans.

Desirable

  • Evidence of strong public presentation skills, both written and spoken.
