Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Acute Medicine Specialist to join our team at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. As a Consultant in Acute Medicine, you will play a key role in providing clinical leadership and expertise in the management of acute medical patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality clinical care to patients with acute medical conditions, including those requiring admission to the Acute Medical Unit.
  • Lead and manage the Acute Medical Take, ensuring effective referral and management of patients.
  • Collaborate with other medical and surgical teams to provide comprehensive care to patients.
  • Develop and implement service improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and outcomes.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical governance and audit processes.
  • Participate in research and quality improvement activities, including the development of new treatments and protocols.
  • Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, including doctors in training and medical students.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with other healthcare professionals, including nurses, therapists, and allied health professionals.
Requirements
  • Full and specialist registration in either Acute Internal Medicine (AIM) or General Internal Medicine (GIM) with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview.
  • Higher academic qualification, such as an MD or PhD.
  • Experience of teaching medical students and supervising junior medical staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Knowledge of NHS priorities and policies related to acute medicine.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and audit principles.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • Formal teaching qualification.
  • Management experience, including experience of leading teams and managing budgets.
  • Knowledge of NHS management structures and policies.
  • Ability to increase the academic profile of the department.
  • Ability to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional, or national levels.
