Job Description

Job Title: Head of Academic Support Services

Job Summary:

The Head of Academic Support Services will be responsible for the management of a range of professional services to support students' academic success. This includes academic advising, English for academic purposes, academic writing, and specialist support tutoring.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Manage Academic Support Staff: The Head of Academic Support Services will manage a team of academic advisors, including the Lead Academic Adviser, Mathematics Tutor, Specific Learning Difficulties Adviser, and English and Academic Writing Adviser.
  2. Ensure Staff Induction and Training: The Head of Academic Support Services will ensure that new staff are fully inducted and trained to provide high-quality support to students.
  3. Manage Academic Support Services: The Head of Academic Support Services will oversee the provision of academic support services, including academic advising, English language and academic writing, mathematics tutoring, and specific learning difficulties support.
  4. Monitor Student Attendance: The Head of Academic Support Services will oversee undergraduate student attendance monitoring, working closely with faculty and the Visa Team to monitor attendance and address any issues.
  5. Build Relationships: The Head of Academic Support Services will build and maintain good working relationships with faculty, staff, and other heads of professional services to ensure students receive high-quality coordinated support and services.
  6. Coordinate Student Requests: The Head of Academic Support Services will coordinate students' requests for references and other support services.
  7. Collect and Maintain Data: The Head of Academic Support Services will collect and maintain accurate data and records of the services provided for evaluation purposes.
  8. Other Duties: The Head of Academic Support Services will perform other duties as required, including sitting on committees and working groups.

Requirements:

  • Postgraduate Degree: A postgraduate degree or equivalent professional or vocational qualification is required.
  • Management Experience: Experience of managing staff in higher education is essential.
  • Academic Advising Experience: Significant experience of academic advising or providing academic support in higher education in the UK and US system is required.
  • Cultural Competence: Experience of supporting students from a range of social, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds is essential.
  • Legislative Knowledge: A good understanding of GDPR, Equality Act, and other legislation relevant to student support is required.
  • Communication Skills: Strong communication skills, including excellent verbal and written English, are essential.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, able to build good working relationships with faculty and staff at all levels, are required.
  • IT Skills: Strong IT skills, including the use of Google, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, email, Internet, and databases, are essential.
  • Adaptability: The ability to adapt and positively respond to rapid change is required.
  • Travel and Flexibility: The ability to travel and occasionally work weekends and outside of normal office hours is essential.
