Job Description

Job Title: Head of Academic Support Services

Job Summary:

The Head of Academic Support Services will be responsible for the management of a range of professional services to support students' academic success. This includes academic advising, English for academic purposes, academic writing, and specialist support tutoring.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Manage Academic Support Staff: The Head of Academic Support Services will be responsible for managing a team of academic advisors, including the Lead Academic Adviser, Mathematics Tutor, Specific Learning Difficulties Adviser, and English and Academic Writing Adviser.
  2. Ensure Staff Induction and Training: The Head of Academic Support Services will ensure that new staff are fully inducted and trained to provide high-quality support to students.
  3. Manage Academic Support Services: The Head of Academic Support Services will be responsible for managing academic advising, English language and academic writing, mathematics tutoring, and specific learning difficulties support.
  4. Monitor Student Attendance: The Head of Academic Support Services will oversee undergraduate student attendance monitoring, working closely with faculty and the Visa Team to monitor attendance and address poor attendance through informal or formal procedures.
  5. Build Relationships: The Head of Academic Support Services will build and maintain good working relationships with faculty leadership, other heads of professional services, and colleagues at other Northeastern University sites to ensure students receive high-quality coordinated support and services.
  6. Coordinate Student Requests: The Head of Academic Support Services will coordinate students' requests for references and sit on committees and working groups as required.
  7. Collect and Maintain Data: The Head of Academic Support Services will collect and maintain accurate data and records of the services provided for evaluation purposes, preparing reports on service usage and impact.

Person Specification:

  • Postgraduate degree or equivalent professional or vocational qualification
  • Experience of management of staff in higher education
  • Significant experience of academic advising or providing academic support in higher education in the UK and US system
  • Experience of supporting students from a range of social, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Good understanding of GDPR, Equality Act, and other legislation relevant to student support
  • In-depth knowledge of the academic expectation for students in British and American universities
  • Strong communication skills - excellent verbal and written English
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to quickly build good working relationships with faculty and staff at all levels
  • Strong IT skills, using Google, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, email, Internet, and databases
  • Ability to adapt and positively respond to rapid change
  • Ability to travel and occasionally work weekends and outside of normal office hours
