Job Title: SCPHN School Nurse

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced SCPHN School Nurse to join our team at NELFT NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our Maternal Mental Health Service, you will play a vital role in providing specialist psychological assessments, interventions, and psycho-education to patients, carers, and families experiencing birth trauma, tokophobia, and death of a baby in the neonatal period.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Provide specialist psychological assessments, interventions, and psycho-education to patients, carers, and families experiencing birth trauma, tokophobia, and death of a baby in the neonatal period.
  • Show skill in triaging, co-ordinating, and managing a clinical caseload of complex cases, including assessing risks.
  • Function as a core, fully integrated member of the MMHS, attending and participating in psychological therapy, training, and MDT work.
  • Offer support, consultation, and training about the psychological treatment and management of issues relating to maternal mental health, baby loss, and birth trauma.
  • Liaise with other disciplines responsible for a patient's care, both within physical and mental health services, when necessary.
  • Offer training and workshops to appropriate health professional colleagues on the treatment and management of psychological distress relating to MMH.
  • Employ core professional skills in carrying out service evaluation and promote service development with the principal psychological therapist.
  • Deliver a culturally and ethically sensitive, equitable psychological therapy service to all minority groups, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, culture, religion, and disability.

Person Specification:

Qualifications:

Essential Criteria:

  • Doctoral level training in clinical or counselling psychology, or equivalent, accredited by the BPS AND HCPC registration as a practitioner psychologist OR Accredited qualification in psychotherapy OR Accredited qualification in counselling AND Full membership of BABCP, BACP, UKCP or other appropriate professional body.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Additional specialist training in advanced therapy skills, such as CBT, ACT, stress management, family interventions, pain management, and bereavement work.

Experience:

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience and skills in the application and delivery of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention, management, and evaluation across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care, and in-patient settings, within the NHS, including risk assessment and management of complex cases.

Knowledge:

Desirable Criteria:

  • An awareness of NHS Plan, NSF, and clinical governance priorities.
  • Understanding of the psychological issues relating to Maternity Mental Health services, including knowledge of the impact of existing mental health problems or learning disabilities on maternity and gynaecology-related conditions.
  • Well-developed skills in holistic care that takes into account the mind, body, and spiritual aspects of human experience.

Skills:

Essential Criteria:

  • Skill in working in close liaison with related services, such as IAPT, peri-natal, and psychiatric liaison, and signposting onward when appropriate.
  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical, and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers, and other professional colleagues within and outside the NHS.

  • To be able to travel efficiently throughout the area.
  • Sensitivity to issues of equality and diversity, with experience of the application of psychological interventions in different cultural contexts.
  • Ability to work with a high level of autonomy within the bounds of the job description and professional competence.
  • Knowledge, enthusiasm, and sensitivity for working psychologically with people with traumatic experiences of their maternity and gynaecological issues, including sub-fertility, traumatic delivery, foetal abnormality, stillbirth, and neonatal death.
  • Ability to use supervision and other appropriate means to process highly distressing material both from patients and team members, such as bereavement midwives.
  • Experience of working flexibly when working with others, especially in response to clinical crises such as inpatient medical trauma.
  • Able to maintain a high degree of professionalism and competence when presented with complex, emotive, and distressing issues.
