Job Overview

New Horizon Youth Centre is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Caseworker to join our team. As a Caseworker, you will play a vital role in supporting young people involved with the criminal justice system or impacted by violence. Your primary responsibility will be to develop and deliver a holistic service to these young people, ensuring they receive a high-quality service from initial contact to move-on.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities
  1. Develop and deliver a holistic service to young people involved with the criminal justice system or impacted by violence.
  2. Hold and manage a caseload of young people, providing regular contact and building a positive attachment with these individuals.
  3. Work with colleagues at NHYC and external partners to enable young people to develop skills for independent living and coping mechanisms to change their lifestyle.
  4. Establish, develop, and deliver innovative programmes of activities that respond to clients' changing needs, keeping them safe and enabling them to move on independently.
  5. Provide expert coaching and guidance to clients, monitoring and evaluating their progress, and providing key working sessions.
  6. Continued use of feedback and commitment to a service that is sensitive and responsive to clients' needs, involving completing Initial Contacts Forms, needs assessments, risk assessments, and action plans with clients.
  7. Take a hands-on approach to dealing with complex or difficult situations young people face.
  8. Contribute to research and innovation projects that ensure NHYC remains a leading organisation within the sector.
  9. Input and extract information from client monitoring systems and other accounting and database systems, utilising relevant software for the production of correspondence and reports.
Reviewing Personal and Professional Development Needs

To be proactive in reviewing and evaluating own performance and identifying and acting upon areas for improvement.

Qualifications, Experience, and Track Record
  1. Ability to work effectively with young people with experience of the criminal justice system to identify personal goals and support mechanisms for change.
  2. Experience enabling young people to access housing, education, training, and employment outcomes.
  3. Experience of planning and delivering work with young people on both a 1:1 and group basis, meeting the diverse and varied needs of these young people.
  4. Experience of working with young people who have experienced violence, trauma, and/or involvement in the criminal justice system in a casework setting.
  5. Experience of using IT systems, including knowledge of databases, to support the achievement of personal and collective work goals.
  6. Existing relationships with relevant partners, particularly housing providers, probation services, youth justice services, custodial establishments, and other supporting services.
Knowledge and Skills
  1. Ability to hold and manage a caseload of clients, from assessment and engagement through to maintenance of the relationship, initiating regular contact and building a positive attachment with these young people.
  2. Understanding of the kinds of challenging behaviour that clients might demonstrate and the ability to be resilient to working in crisis situations, delivering strategies for dealing with such behaviour and working within set boundaries that enable the client to move on with their lives.
  3. Thorough and up-to-date working knowledge of local and national government policies and housing legislation, with particular attention to the criminal justice cohort.
  4. Knowledge of working to performance indicators, including monitoring and reporting on service outputs/outcomes, client tracking, analysing performance information, and identifying corrective action.
  5. Experience and knowledge around safeguarding policy and procedures for children and young adults.
  6. A working knowledge of and commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as it applies to a supportive service and in the workplace.
  7. The confidence to work independently in the community and across various secure and prison settings.
  8. An understanding of trauma-informed practice in the youth and adult justice sector and the challenges for young people impacted by serious youth violence.
Additional Job Requirements
  1. Willingness and ability to work outside of normal hours on occasion, including work over the Christmas period when required.
  2. Willingness to work from different sites, including our day centre in Camden and some flexible home working.
