Main Duties of the Job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and committed Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse to join the Surgical Emergency Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for coordinating the unit, supporting nursing staff, and managing patient flow. You will work closely with the SEU Bleep holder to ensure effective patient flow and provide clinical leadership.

The successful applicant will lead a small team of nurses, working closely with the ward sister to ensure staff have annual appraisals and appropriate training. You will also support the ward sisters with Ulysses investigations, patient complaints, and monthly audits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be professionally accountable for assessing patient needs and developing planned care.
  • Demonstrate expert knowledge and skills in patient management, responding to changes promptly and appropriately.
  • Identify and discuss nursing/patient needs with the multi-disciplinary team, patients, and carers.
  • Contribute to Triage projects, audits, and quality initiatives as directed by the SENPs/Matron/Surgical Team.
  • Be accountable for specific responsibilities contributing to the organisational and administrative work of the unit.
  • Ensure equipment, supplies, and staffing resources are used appropriately.
  • Report untoward incidents as detailed in departmental and Trust protocols and procedures.
Minimum Requirements
  • Registered Nurse
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Experience in an acute healthcare setting
  • Experience managing staff
  • Specialist experience, knowledge, and skills in General Surgery
  • Experienced in venepuncture & cannulation
  • Management or leadership training
  • Emergency Care experience
Person Specification
  • Current first-level RN registration with NMC
  • Evidence of understanding and insight into current issues in nursing and the NHS
  • Evidence of specialist knowledge and competency in the specialty
  • Experience of participating in projects and audit
  • Educated to diploma/degree level
  • Evidence of post-registration qualification or training in the specialty.
  • Experience of operational management
  • Competent in basic IT skills
