Nuclear Propulsion Systems Designer

We are seeking a highly skilled Nuclear Propulsion Systems Designer to join our team in Derby, working on the design and development of nuclear propulsion systems for the Royal Navy's submarine fleet.

This role involves analyzing reactor performance under normal, abnormal, and accident scenarios, as well as developing a deep understanding of reactor plant operation and protection systems.

You will work closely with our experienced team to analyze fluid flow and heat transfer, using commercial and in-house developed codes and methods to evaluate primary systems and their components.

The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, be highly driven, and strive to maintain excellent delivery performance. Experience in simulating reactor coolant systems is desirable but not mandatory.

We offer a competitive salary, estimated at £70,000 - £90,000 per annum, excellent benefits, including bonus, employee support assistance, and employee discounts. Occasional business travel may be required to our waterfront locations.

To be considered for this role, you must hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance and be a UK national.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Analyze reactor performance under normal, abnormal, and accident scenarios.
  • Develop a deep understanding of reactor plant operation and protection systems.
  • Perform fluid flow and heat transfer analysis to support robust design evaluation of the Nuclear Steam Raising Plant.
  • Use commercial and in-house developed codes and methods to evaluate primary systems and their components.
  • Define pressure and temperature transient profiles for the life of the submarine on existing and future plant designs.
Requirements:
  • Good understanding of fundamental engineering principles and processes.
  • Solid understanding of the principles of fluid dynamics and heat transfer.
  • Excellent communication skills and high level of drive.
