Job Overview

The Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly skilled Stroke Consultant Physician to join our team. As a key member of our stroke department, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional care to patients with acute stroke needs.

Our stroke department provides a seven-day service for circa 530 stroke patients admitted annually from West Dorset. This has the potential to increase to around eight hundred with the outcome of a regional stroke reconfiguration programme.

We are expanding our team so need to appoint an additional Stroke Consultant. This new role is part of a £2.8m investment in stroke services by the Dorset Integrated Care Board (ICB) supporting the opening of a new Hyper Acute Stroke Unit.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Providing in-patient and out-patient care for patients referred with suspected stroke or TIA
  • Participating in clinical and other activities such as audit, research, and governance to ensure ongoing high standards of patient care
  • Contributing to the provision of a 24-hour acute stroke service delivering thrombolysis and advising on other specialist treatments
  • Contributing to the consultant ward rounds at weekends and public holidays
  • Providing clinical advice for community stroke services as required
  • Providing continuing medical education and conducting undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as appropriate
