Position Overview

Barts Health NHS Trust is seeking a motivated professional to join our advanced oncology pharmacy division. This role provides an exceptional opportunity to enhance your clinical expertise in Oncology while being part of a dedicated and innovative cancer pharmacy team.

This position allows for significant professional growth in various oncology-related areas. You will acquire both clinical and managerial experience by collaborating with our established team of oncology pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

The role is primarily based within our oncology pharmacy department, with opportunities to engage with multiple sites within the organization. This position will enable you to refine your managerial capabilities and gain comprehensive experience in clinical trials, financial management, and electronic prescribing, while also delivering clinical pharmacy services to a diverse range of cancer patients, including those with solid tumors, hematological malignancies, and those undergoing stem cell transplants.

The Cancer Pharmacy Clinical Team is well-integrated within the Barts Cancer Centre, providing inpatient, outpatient, and day-case systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) services. In alignment with the Trust's objectives, we are committed to delivering optimal patient experiences, ensuring exemplary patient safety, and fostering Barts Health as an exceptional workplace.

Main Responsibilities

The primary duties of the role include:

  • Ensuring a safe and effective oncology pharmacy service that meets user needs.
  • Optimizing medication use for individual patients.
  • Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient flow.
  • Developing and implementing formulary guidelines based on current evidence and national standards in oncology.
  • Managing the drug budget for Pharmacy Cancer Services and identifying cost-saving initiatives in collaboration with relevant teams.
  • Adhering to all regulatory standards, including Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
  • Monitoring the Cancer Pharmacy Team's performance against key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Setting clear objectives for team members and ensuring their competency in their roles.

Person Specification

Experience Requirements

  • Significant post-registration experience in a hospital setting.
  • Prior experience in providing pharmacy services within oncology wards.
  • Experience in aseptic services, including chemotherapy preparation.
  • Experience in supervising cytotoxic reconstitution services.
  • Proven ability to manage and organize staff and projects effectively.
  • Experience in evaluating or reviewing cancer medications.

Skills Requirements

  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Ability to manage and delegate tasks effectively.

Qualifications Requirements

  • MPharm or equivalent qualification.
  • Registered pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Specialist postgraduate certificate in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent.
  • Specialist postgraduate certificate in Technical Services or equivalent knowledge and experience.
  • Independent prescribing qualification or willingness to pursue this qualification.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Membership in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS).
  • Membership in the British Oncology Pharmacy Association (BOPA).
