London, Greater London, United Kingdom UCL Eastman Dental Institute Full time

Position Overview

The UCL Eastman Dental Institute is seeking a dedicated Research Associate to contribute to pioneering studies in synaptic neurotransmitter release and neurodevelopmental disorders. This collaborative role will involve partnerships with esteemed laboratories, leveraging expertise in synaptic physiology and neurological conditions.

Project Focus

The primary objective of this research is to unravel the molecular and cellular pathways implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders associated with mutations in synaptic vesicle release machinery genes, collectively referred to as SNAREopathies. This investigation aims to shed light on the pathophysiological mechanisms of these disorders and explore innovative gene therapy strategies. The successful candidate will employ advanced electrophysiological and optical techniques to conduct comprehensive functional analyses of disease-related variants, including high-speed fluorescence imaging of neurotransmitter release at individual synapses.

Candidate Profile

Applicants should possess a PhD in a relevant field such as neuroscience or biophysics (or be nearing completion) and demonstrate a strong background in experimental laboratory research. Proficiency in quantitative optical microscopy, patch-clamp electrophysiology, molecular biology, and cell culture techniques is essential. Familiarity with scientific programming and a robust publication history are advantageous.

Employment Benefits

The appointment as Research Associate is contingent upon the successful completion of a PhD; if not yet awarded, the initial role will be as a Research Assistant with a competitive salary. The position offers a range of attractive benefits, including:

  • Generous leave policy (including annual leave, bank holidays, and closure days)
