Position Overview

We are seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of Neuroscience to contribute to the EIT and Neurophysiology Lab within the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at UCL Eastman Dental Institute. This role is part of a project funded by the UK Medical Research Council aimed at understanding the structure and function of the human vagus nerve to facilitate targeted electrical stimulation for therapeutic purposes.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research at a prestigious institution, advancing the field of selective neuromodulation. You will collaborate with a diverse team of professionals, including engineers, physiologists, and medical practitioners, while also working alongside other research groups within the consortium.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting research focused on peripheral and autonomic nerve imaging and neuromodulation.
  • Designing and executing experiments, as well as analyzing and documenting results.
  • Performing ex vivo imaging and mapping of human vagus nerves, including histological preparation, staining, and microCT imaging.
  • Participating in in vivo physiological studies utilizing innovative multi-electrode nerve cuffs and Electrical Impedance Tomography.
  • Preparing and presenting research findings to peers, drafting manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and compiling progress reports for funding entities.
  • Contributing to the overall goals of the research team and department.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) and a PhD in neuroscience or a related discipline such as Biology, Biomedicine, or Biophysics. You should have a solid background in histology, immunohistochemistry, and medical imaging, along with a comprehensive understanding of autonomic neuroscience.

Experience in dissection, anatomy, peripheral nerve research, image reconstruction, and proficiency in programming (e.g., Matlab) is highly desirable. Strong practical skills in the aforementioned techniques, a proven track record of publications, excellent communication abilities, and a commitment to public engagement are essential attributes for this role.
