Head of Fundraising Strategy

Contract Type:
Permanent

Salary:
Grade 8: £66,679 - £88,977. Appointments for this role will generally be made at £80,000 per annum

Working Arrangements:

An exceptional opportunity to lead a dynamic fundraising team and contribute to our new fundraising initiative aimed at enhancing patient care and alleviating health issues across communities.

As the Head of Fundraising Strategy, you will spearhead our efforts to establish enduring relationships with major donors, trusts/foundations, and corporate partners for the Royal College of Physicians.

Your primary responsibility will be to inspire and guide the fundraising team, including direct oversight of the Deputy Director for Corporate Partnerships and the Head of Philanthropy.

Additionally, you will manage your own portfolio of international donors and seek opportunities to engage directly with potential supporters at the major and principal gift level.

You will be empowered to work independently to devise and execute our fundraising strategy and collaborate with our development board on planning for a new fundraising initiative, following the successful conclusion of our previous campaign.

You will play a crucial role in achieving our strategic objective to enhance our income from major gift fundraising and, based on performance, you may also have the opportunity to expand the fundraising team.

You will report to and collaborate closely with the CEO and Chief of Staff, receiving full support and involvement from the President, College Officers, and Trustees.

Purpose and Scope

Key Responsibilities

  • Define the strategic objectives of a new multi-year fundraising initiative and ensure the achievement of our ambitious income generation targets annually.
  • Collaborate closely with the President, Trustees, CEO, and other senior colleagues and volunteers to develop and implement the RCP's fundraising strategy.
  • Elevate our fundraising profile to showcase the contributions of donors and the impact of funded projects at all levels.
  • Revise our fundraising communications strategy and produce high-quality, comprehensive digital and printed materials.
  • Plan an annual engagement program between the President/CEO and international major gift prospects, including from our global membership.
  • Facilitate the contributions of development committee members in advising on strategy, monitoring progress towards agreed targets, introducing new prospects, and assisting with cultivation.
  • Foster the development of fundraising skills among colleagues, including your direct reports and senior colleagues involved in solicitation.
  • Maximize the fundraising potential of the RCP's heritage collections and enhance the fundraising income of our museum, archive, and library.
  • Ensure due diligence on prospective donors and adherence to internal processes and procedures for fundraising, reporting, financial management, and information management.
  • Oversee the existing awards program, which is managed by the development administrator.
About You

  • A demonstrated history of effective fundraising leadership.
  • Significant major gift experience, including securing substantial contributions from individuals, trusts/foundations, or corporate partners.
  • Proficient in influencing and negotiating at the highest levels both externally and within an organization; capable of articulating and communicating compelling propositions and making 'asks' for contributions.
  • Proven track record of developing a fundraising strategy over time, showcasing innovation and creativity as well as knowledge and experience of successful programs from peer organizations.
  • Highly developed stakeholder management skills with a proven ability to create, develop, and maintain trusted and effective relationships with major philanthropic partners and potential partners.
  • Excellent networking skills to build and sustain a network of supporters for the RCP.
  • Proven success in line management that fosters and motivates a high-performing team.
  • Strong decision-making skills, adept at navigating complex environments, strategic thinking, and exceptional communication abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills to optimize outcomes against multiple competing priorities.
  • Familiarity with fundraising regulations and compliance.
