Senior Environmental Hydraulic Modeler

We are currently seeking a dedicated Environmental Hydraulic Modeler to enhance our Catchment and River Restoration teams. This role will encompass a diverse range of projects, from Natural Flood Management assessments to River Restoration initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyzing datasets, utilizing GIS, and interpreting modeling results.
  • Offering expert advice on River and Catchment Restoration to both internal teams and external clients.
  • Leading Environmental Hydraulic modeling efforts (1D and 2D), with expertise in Hec-RAS and/or TUFLOW.
  • Collaborating within a multi-disciplinary project team to influence design outcomes.
  • Producing clear and coherent reports, as well as reviewing documentation.
  • Conducting fieldwork focused on geomorphology, River Restoration, and Natural Flood Management.
  • Providing mentorship and support to junior team members.
  • Overseeing projects and project teams, ensuring timely and quality delivery.
  • Engaging with clients and stakeholders during meetings and workshops.
  • Leading and assisting in the preparation of tenders for new commissions.

Location:

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential Competencies:

We are looking for organized, motivated, and adaptable individuals who can work independently or collaboratively. A strong background in environmental science and a keen interest in water-related issues are essential. Candidates should possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, along with effective communication abilities, both written and verbal.

Applicants should demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of various Natural Flood Management and river restoration techniques, as well as the connections between fluvial geomorphology, hydraulics, hydrology, and ecology. We seek an enthusiastic and dynamic individual who excels in teamwork and communication, with a proven track record as a key contributor in multi-disciplinary settings. Willingness to travel throughout the UK and Ireland, including occasional overnight stays, is required.

A degree or equivalent qualification in geography or a related science field, along with substantial professional experience, is necessary. Chartered status (ICE, CIWEM, CGeog) is highly valued at JBA, and candidates should show a commitment to pursuing chartered status.

Essential Skills:

  • Understanding of Nature-Based Solutions for catchment resilience.
  • Experience in a multi-disciplinary design team, effectively communicating environmental benefits.
  • Fieldwork experience in site assessments.
  • Proficiency in at least one 1D hydraulic modeling software (e.g., Flood Modeller) or 2D hydraulic modeling software (e.g., HEC-RAS, TUFLOW).
  • Solid grasp of UK catchment hydrology.
  • Project management skills and client relationship building.
  • Aptitude for mentoring and supporting junior staff.
  • Experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
  • Report writing and quality assurance capabilities (Excel, Word).
  • A valid UK Driving license is required.
  • Experience in tender preparation.

Desirable Skills:

  • Knowledge of sediment transport, erosion, and deposition processes.
  • Experience in contract management.
