Senior Environmental Hydraulic Modeler

We are currently seeking a skilled Environmental Hydraulic Modeler to enhance our Catchment and River Restoration teams. This role encompasses a diverse range of projects, including Natural Flood Management studies and River Restoration initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilizing and interpreting datasets, GIS, and modelling results.
  • Delivering expert advice on River and Catchment Restoration to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leading Environmental Hydraulic modelling efforts (1D and 2D), specializing in Hec-RAS and/or TUFLOW.
  • Collaborating within a multi-disciplinary project team to guide design processes.
  • Composing clear and logical reports, as well as reviewing documentation.
  • Conducting fieldwork focused on geomorphology, River Restoration, and Natural Flood Management.
  • Providing mentorship and support to junior colleagues.
  • Overseeing projects and teams, ensuring timely and quality delivery.
  • Engaging with clients and stakeholders during meetings and workshops.
  • Assisting in the preparation and leadership of tenders for commissions.

Location:

This position can be based in various locations, with flexibility offered for the right candidate. Our organization supports agile working arrangements, promoting a balanced approach to work.

Qualifications and Experience:

Essential Competencies:

We are looking for organized, motivated, and adaptable individuals who can work independently or collaboratively. A solid background in environmental issues and a keen interest in water and ecological matters are essential. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities are required, along with effective communication skills, both written and verbal.

Applicants should possess a comprehensive understanding of various Natural Flood Management and river restoration strategies, as well as the connections between fluvial geomorphology, hydraulics, hydrology, and ecology. We seek an enthusiastic and dynamic individual who excels in communication and teamwork, demonstrating the ability to contribute significantly to a multi-disciplinary team. Willingness to travel throughout the UK and Ireland, including occasional overnight stays, is necessary.

A degree or equivalent qualification in geography or a related science field, along with proven experience in a professional setting, is required.

Chartered status (ICE, CIWEM, CGeog) is valued at JBA and appreciated by our clients; therefore, candidates should express a commitment to pursuing chartered status.

Essential Skills:

  • Understanding of Nature-Based Solutions for enhancing catchment resilience.
  • Experience in a multi-disciplinary design team, capable of articulating environmental benefits to diverse audiences.
  • Fieldwork experience in site assessments.
  • Proficiency in at least one 1D hydraulic modelling software (e.g., Flood Modeller) or one 2D hydraulic modelling software (e.g., HEC-RAS, TUFLOW).
  • Solid understanding of UK catchment hydrology.
  • Project management skills and client relationship building.
  • Ability to mentor and guide junior staff.
  • Experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
  • Report writing and quality assurance capabilities (Excel, Word).
  • A valid UK Driving licence is required.
  • Experience in tender preparation.

Desirable Skills:

  • Knowledge of sediment transport, erosion, and deposition processes.
  • Experience in contract management.
