Alongside its esteemed Competition practice, the firm boasts comprehensive expertise in Corporate, Financial Institutions, Commercial, and Financing sectors. Additionally, we have robust practices in Financial Regulation, Technology, Digital, Data and Intellectual Property, Tax, Real Estate, Dispute Resolution, Pensions, Employment, and Incentives.

The firm is structured into groups that manage a diverse array of work, allowing lawyers to engage in a wide range of matters. Much of our work is international in scope, involving transactions with our overseas offices and leading independent law firms across various jurisdictions.

The cases we handle are typically complex and demanding. However, we strive to provide associates with as much responsibility and client interaction as they are prepared for.

Group Structure of Our Competition Practice

Our London-based Competition practice is directed by 7 partners, supported by 3 Senior Counsel, and currently comprises 70 associates and 18 trainees. We are also expanding our teams in Brussels and Hong Kong. As an associate, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with any of the partners within the Competition Group, including those located in other countries, offering you exposure to a variety of working styles and strategic methodologies.

This practice is recognized as one of the leading competition law practices globally, and our associates frequently engage in high-profile work in this field. We manage cartel and other antitrust investigations and many significant cases, including advising major corporations on various competition inquiries worldwide; overseeing the European and international merger control components of substantial transactions; and handling multijurisdictional follow-on litigation.

The Group undertakes a wide range of work types across competition and regulatory sectors. Unlike many other firms, we encourage associates to maintain a diverse caseload (covering both contentious and non-contentious matters) rather than focusing narrowly. Typically, we expect about 50% of your workload to involve merger control matters, with the remaining 50% encompassing a mix of cartel investigations, abuse of dominance issues, state aid, public procurement, regulatory, and other contentious matters. Our experience indicates that this approach leads to greater professional development.

Depending on the scale and intricacy of any given project, you may find yourself working independently on a matter or as part of a larger team. You will also have the chance to build connections beyond your immediate team; for instance, our Competition associates often collaborate with Corporate, Disputes and Investigations, and Intellectual Property lawyers, providing clients with unparalleled integration in legal counsel.

With the Competition Group operating from our London, Brussels, and Hong Kong offices, there are frequently both international and domestic client secondment opportunities available to associates, all of whom are encouraged to gain experience in one of our other offices at the appropriate time.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES //

The key responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing advice on a variety of competition law and commercial matters
  • Drafting, reviewing, and modifying the legal and commercial elements of documentation
  • Building professional relationships with clients
  • Assisting the broader team in business development and enhancing the firm's profile
  • Overseeing and mentoring the work of others, including trainees

CANDIDATE PROFILE //

Applicants for this position should possess:

  • Appropriate level qualification (0-6 PQE, ideally gained in a City or leading international firm, though all applications will be considered)
  • Capability to draft, advise, and negotiate concerning complex transactions
  • Excellent legal and commercial acumen
  • Strong academic credentials and a proven high level of analytical ability
  • Outstanding client relationship management skills
  • Exceptional efficiency and transaction management capabilities
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, intellectually stimulating environment

  • A high standard of professionalism and integrity
  • Experience across a range of high-value commercial and corporate transactions or similar (e.g., advising companies in regulated sectors such as telecommunications, energy, broadcasting, etc.)
