We are structured into specialized groups that handle a diverse array of work, allowing our lawyers to engage in a wide range of matters. Our projects often have an international scope, involving collaboration with our global offices and leading independent law firms across various jurisdictions.
The cases we tackle are typically complex and intellectually stimulating. We strive to provide associates with significant responsibility and client interaction as they progress in their careers.
Group Structure of Our Competition Practice
The London Competition practice is spearheaded by 7 partners, with support from 3 Senior Counsel, and currently comprises 70 associates and 18 trainees. Our teams are also expanding in Brussels and Hong Kong. As an associate, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with partners from the Competition Group, including those located in different countries, allowing you to experience a variety of working styles and strategic methodologies.
Our practice is renowned as one of the foremost competition law practices globally, and our associates frequently engage in high-profile work within this field. We manage cartel investigations and other antitrust matters, including advising major corporations on various competition inquiries worldwide; overseeing the European and international merger control components of significant transactions; and handling multijurisdictional follow-on litigation.
The Group addresses a wide range of tasks within the competition and regulatory domains. Unlike many firms, we encourage our associates to maintain a broad caseload that includes both contentious and non-contentious matters, rather than becoming overly specialized. Typically, we anticipate that around 50% of your workload will involve merger control, with the remaining 50% encompassing a mix of cartel investigations, abuse of dominance cases, state aid, public procurement, regulatory issues, and other contentious matters.
Depending on the scale and intricacy of each project, you may operate as the sole associate on a matter or as part of a larger team. You will also have the chance to build connections beyond your immediate team; for instance, our Competition associates frequently collaborate with Corporate, Disputes and Investigations, and Intellectual Property lawyers, providing clients with unparalleled integrated legal advice.
With the Competition Group functioning from our London, Brussels, and Hong Kong offices, there are often opportunities for both international and domestic client secondments available to associates, who are encouraged to gain experience in one of our other offices at the appropriate time.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES //
The primary responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:
- Providing counsel on a variety of competition law and commercial matters
- Drafting, reviewing, and modifying legal and commercial documentation
- Building professional relationships with clients
- Assisting the broader team in business development and enhancing the firm's visibility
- Overseeing and mentoring the work of others, including trainees
CANDIDATE PROFILE //
Ideal candidates for this position should possess:
- Appropriate qualifications (0-6 PQE, ideally gained in a City or leading international firm, although all applicants will be considered)
- Capability to draft, advise, and negotiate complex transactions
- Strong legal and commercial acumen
- Excellent academic credentials and a proven high level of analytical ability
- Outstanding client relationship management skills
- Exceptional efficiency and transaction management capabilities
