In addition to our esteemed Competition practice, the firm boasts extensive expertise in Corporate, Financial Institutions, Commercial, and Financing sectors. Our strong practices also encompass Financial Regulation, Technology, Digital, Data and Intellectual Property, Tax, Real Estate, Dispute Resolution, Pensions, Employment, and Incentives.

The firm is structured into groups that manage a diverse range of work, promoting collaboration among lawyers on a wide array of matters. Much of our work is international in scope, involving transactions with our overseas offices and leading independent law firms across various jurisdictions.

The cases we handle are typically complex and intellectually stimulating. We strive to provide associates with significant responsibility and client interaction commensurate with their readiness.

Group Structure of Our Competition Practice

Our London-based Competition practice is directed by 7 partners, supported by 3 Senior Counsel, and currently comprises 70 associates and 18 trainees. We are also expanding our teams in Brussels and Hong Kong. As an associate, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with any of the partners within the Competition Group, including those in other countries, allowing you to experience diverse working styles and strategic methodologies.

This practice is recognized as one of the foremost competition law practices globally, and our associates frequently engage in high-profile work in this domain. We manage cartel and antitrust investigations, as well as notable cases, including advisory roles for major corporations regarding various competition inquiries worldwide; overseeing European and international merger control aspects of significant transactions; and participating in multijurisdictional follow-on litigation.

The Group addresses a variety of tasks across competition and regulatory landscapes. Unlike many firms, we encourage associates to maintain a broad caseload, balancing both contentious and non-contentious matters rather than becoming overly specialized. Generally, we anticipate that approximately 50% of your workload will pertain to merger control, with the remaining 50% involving a mix of cartel investigations, abuse of dominance issues, state aid, public procurement, regulatory, and other contentious matters. This approach fosters greater professional development.

Depending on the scale and intricacy of specific projects, you may operate as the sole associate on a matter or collaborate as part of a larger team. You will also have the chance to cultivate relationships beyond your immediate team; for instance, our Competition associates often work alongside Corporate, Disputes, Investigations, and Intellectual Property lawyers, offering clients unparalleled integration in legal counsel.

With the Competition Group functioning from our London, Brussels, and Hong Kong offices, there are frequent opportunities for both international and domestic client secondments available to associates, all of whom are encouraged to gain experience in one of our other offices at the appropriate time.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES //

The primary responsibilities of this role are outlined below, and there may be additional tasks not listed. You may occasionally be required to work outside our standard working hours.

  • Providing advice on a range of competition law and commercial matters
  • Drafting, reviewing, and modifying legal and commercial documentation
  • Building professional relationships with clients
  • Assisting the broader team in business development and enhancing the firm's profile
  • Overseeing and mentoring the work of others, including trainees

CANDIDATE PROFILE //

Applicants for this position must possess:

  • Appropriate level qualification (0-6 PQE, ideally developed in a City or leading international firm, although all applications will be considered)
  • Capability to draft, advise, and negotiate regarding complex transactions
  • Excellent legal and commercial acumen
  • Strong academic credentials and a proven high level of analytical ability
