We are looking for a visionary, innovative, and cooperative leader to oversee the preservation and management of the historically significant Hatchlands Park estate in Surrey. Additionally, you will contribute to the revitalization of the Clandon Park estate, which has been the subject of extensive restoration efforts following a devastating fire.



Work Environment

Hatchlands Park is a cherished National Trust estate, appreciated by visitors for its welcoming ambiance and manageable size. You will join a close-knit and enthusiastic team dedicated to maintaining the property and providing an exceptional experience for our guests. Reporting to the General Manager, you will play a vital role in the Property Leadership Team, shaping the strategic vision for the estate and spearheading initiatives within your domain. The experience of working at Hatchlands and on the Clandon Project is collaborative and diverse; we support one another, tackle challenges collectively, and celebrate our achievements.

As a senior staff member, you will also take on Duty Management responsibilities, which includes weekend work on a rotational basis.

Your workplace will be exclusively at Hatchlands, conveniently accessible via public transport or personal vehicle.



Key Responsibilities

Your primary focus will be on Hatchlands Park, where you will oversee the stewardship of the estate's collections and interiors, leading the House & Collections Team and directly supervising two staff members. The estate also hosts a tenant, Alec Cobbe, whose collection of musical instruments and fine art enriches the showrooms. Collaborating closely with the tenant on the interpretation and presentation of the Cobbe Collection will be an essential aspect of your role.

You will be responsible for opening the estate to the public six days a week for nine months each year and managing a team of over a hundred volunteers who facilitate this through guiding, conservation efforts, and research. You will partner with the Visitor Operations and Experiences Manager to implement seasonal and cultural programming activities and events throughout the year.



Candidate Profile

We invite applications from individuals who can demonstrate:

  • Experience in managing historic collections and properties, with a solid grasp of collections care and preventive conservation
  • Expertise in commissioning remedial conservation for a diverse range of artifacts
  • Strong project management capabilities, with attention to detail and precision in planning both short- and long-term projects
  • The ability to inspire and develop a team of staff and volunteers
  • A commitment to engaging audiences and sharing the narratives behind our collections and conservation efforts
  • Experience in managing compliance, health and safety, and emergency protocols
  • Robust business planning and organizational skills, including budget management
