Heritage Collections and House Operations Manager

Guildford, Surrey, United Kingdom The National Trust Full time
Heritage Collections and House Operations Manager

Overview

***INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY PLEASE***

We are in search of a visionary, innovative, and cooperative leader to oversee the preservation and management of the historically significant Hatchlands Park estate in Surrey. Additionally, you will play a vital role in the revitalization of the Clandon Park estate, which suffered extensive damage from a fire in 2015 and is now the centerpiece of the National Trust's most ambitious conservation initiative.

Work Environment

Hatchlands Park is a charming National Trust estate, cherished by guests for its welcoming ambiance and intimate scale. You will join a close-knit and enthusiastic team dedicated to maintaining the property and providing an exceptional experience for our visitors. Reporting directly to the General Manager, you will be an integral member of the Property Leadership Team, guiding the strategic vision for the estate and spearheading projects within your domain. Your role at Hatchlands and the Clandon Project will be dynamic and collaborative; we encourage teamwork, collective problem-solving, and celebrating our achievements together.

As a senior staff member, you will also take on Duty Management responsibilities, which will include weekend work on a rotational basis.

Your primary location will be at Hatchlands, conveniently accessible via local transport options.

Key Responsibilities

Your main focus will be at Hatchlands Park, where you will oversee the stewardship of the estate's collections and interiors, leading the House & Collections Team and directly supervising two staff members. The estate also houses a tenant, Alec Cobbe, whose collection of musical instruments and fine art enriches the showrooms. Collaborating closely with the tenant on the interpretation and display of the Cobbe Collection will be a significant aspect of your role.

You will be responsible for opening the estate to the public six days a week for nine months of the year and managing a dedicated team of over a hundred volunteers who facilitate this through guiding, conservation cleaning, and research. You will partner with the Visitor Operations and Experiences Manager to coordinate seasonal and cultural programming and events throughout the year.

Candidate Profile

We invite applications from individuals who can demonstrate:

  • Experience in managing historic collections and properties, with a strong grasp of collections care and preventive conservation practices.
  • Expertise in commissioning remedial conservation for a diverse range of artifacts.
  • Exceptional project management abilities, with meticulous attention to detail and precision in planning both short- and long-term initiatives.
  • The capability to inspire and develop a team of staff and volunteers.
  • A commitment to engaging audiences and sharing the narratives behind our collections and conservation efforts.
  • Experience in managing compliance, health and safety, and emergency protocols.
  • Strong organizational and business planning skills, including budget management.

Benefits

The National Trust is committed to the principle of 'For everyone, for ever.' We strive to foster an inclusive culture where every individual feels valued and belongs.
