We are in search of a dynamic, innovative, and collaborative leader to oversee the preservation and management of the historically significant Hatchlands Park estate in Surrey. In addition, you will play a vital role in the revitalization of the Clandon Park estate, which has been undergoing extensive restoration following a devastating fire.
Work Environment
Hatchlands Park is a cherished National Trust estate, known for its welcoming ambiance and intimate scale. You will join a small, dedicated team that is enthusiastic about maintaining the property and providing an exceptional experience for our guests. Reporting directly to the General Manager, you will be an integral member of the Property Leadership Team, guiding the strategic vision for the estate and spearheading various initiatives. The collaborative nature of work at Hatchlands and the Clandon Project ensures a diverse and engaging experience; we support one another, tackle challenges collectively, and celebrate our achievements.
As a senior staff member, you will also take on Duty Management responsibilities, which includes weekend work on a rotational basis.
Your primary workplace will be Hatchlands, conveniently located near public transport options.
Key Responsibilities
Your main focus will be on Hatchlands Park, where you will oversee the care of the estate's collections and interiors, leading the House & Collections Team and directly supervising two staff members. The estate also hosts a tenant, whose collection of musical instruments and fine art enriches the visitor experience. Collaborating closely with the tenant to enhance the interpretation and presentation of this collection will be a significant aspect of your role.
You will be responsible for opening the estate to the public six days a week for nine months each year, managing a team of over a hundred volunteers who assist with guiding, conservation cleaning, and research. You will work alongside the Visitor Operations and Experiences Manager to coordinate seasonal and cultural programming and events throughout the year.
Candidate Profile
We invite applications from individuals who can demonstrate:
- Experience in managing historic collections and properties, with a strong understanding of collection care and preventive conservation
- Expertise in commissioning remedial conservation for a diverse range of artifacts
- Exceptional project management abilities, with a keen eye for detail and precision in planning both short- and long-term projects
- The capability to inspire and develop a team of staff and volunteers
- A commitment to engaging diverse audiences and sharing the narratives behind our collections and conservation efforts
- Experience in managing compliance, health and safety, and emergency protocols
- Strong organizational and business planning skills, including budget management
