Senior Biomedical Scientist

A vacancy has arisen for a part-time experienced Senior Biomedical Scientist in our Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department based at our laboratory.
We are one of the leading healthcare providers in the region, serving a large population and providing an essential 24/7 service to our patients.
About the RoleThe successful candidate will work alongside other members of the laboratory management team and undertake primarily Haematology investigations, providing a cross-site, 24/7 service.
The laboratory operates a flexible working week spread over a shift rota, and the successful candidate will be required to work within any section of the department, including core and unsocial hours as required.
Main Responsibilities- Supervise various grades of scientific and support staff.
- Participate in all areas of laboratory bench work, adhering to standard operating procedures and participating in their regular review and update.
- Participate in multidisciplinary working as required.
- Perform techniques and testing, including Full Blood Counts, Malaria antigen and morphology testing, Routine coagulation testing, Blood film morphology, Glandular Fever testing, Haemoglobinopathy testing, and HbA1c testing.
- Communicate patient results and answer enquiries from healthcare professionals within the hospital and in the community, providing information regarding appropriate investigations required and explanation of results, within departmental guidelines and professional code of conduct.
- Interpret clinical information and use scientific knowledge to process specimens for appropriate tests, seeking advice from senior staff and clinicians when necessary.
- Undertake specimen preparation and analysis for a range of sample types.
- Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication within the department.
- Operate and maintain analytical equipment in the department.
- Evaluate and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.
- Interpret complex scientific data and enter test results on pathology computer system.
- Check reports for further action by the clinicians, and authorise reports as delegated within HSL departmental policy.
- Assist in the evaluation of new equipment and advise the head of service, senior scientific colleagues on the need for new equipment and maintenance of existing equipment.
The successful candidate will have:
- Good organisational skills.
- Ability to work accurately, neatly and efficiently.
- Attention to detail is very important.
- Ability to work in a team.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Ability to work on own initiative.
- Ability to communicate efficiently with other members of the laboratory in English - both verbally and in writing.
- Experience of utilising statistical analysis software.
The successful candidate will have:
- Registration with HCPC as Biomedical Scientist.
- MSc in appropriate discipline such as Biomedical Science (or equivalent qualification IBMS HSD).
- Participation in a relevant CPD Scheme IBMS.
- Theoretical and practical knowledge in discipline of pathology relevant to role.
- Previous experience in a relevant laboratory, and proficiency in techniques appropriate to the discipline.
