The Role: Children's Non-Fiction Book Designer

We are seeking an accomplished children's non-fiction book designer with a strong creative vision to contribute to our award-winning list. You will collaborate closely with the editorial team and the Children's Art Director, playing a key role in designing and managing our expanding range of non-fiction, picture, novelty, and activity books.

This position offers the opportunity to create outstanding covers and layouts while discovering, commissioning, and nurturing illustration talent. Your responsibilities will encompass:

  • Interpreting briefs and producing creative and effective designs tailored to the target age group.
  • Guiding projects through all design stages, from initial concept to final print.
  • Contributing innovative ideas for new book developments.
  • Ensuring artwork is meticulously prepared with files suitable for co-editions.
  • Collaborating closely with the Production team to coordinate reprographic work.

Skills and Experience

  • Mastery of Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities.
  • The talent to transform text into visually appealing book layouts.
  • Confidence in communicating ideas within a creative team.
  • Proven ability to sketch and plot ideas before commissioning illustrators.
  • Experience in discovering and collaborating with both established and emerging illustrators.
  • A flexible and adaptable approach to feedback.
  • The capacity to multitask and manage new development projects leading up to book fairs.
  • Solid understanding of the printing process and cover finishes.
  • Excellent artworking skills to deliver print-ready files.
  • Awareness of current design trends and approaches in children's publishing.
