Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and qualified pharmacy technician to play a crucial role in the safe and efficient provision of chemotherapy and supportive medications for patients within our Oncology Unit.

This position offers an exciting opportunity for a motivated pharmacy technician who is passionate about enhancing the pharmacy experience for individuals undergoing cancer treatment.

Upon meeting established criteria, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to advance to a senior pharmacy technician role, which includes leadership responsibilities and line management duties.

An ACPT qualification is preferred; however, candidates without this qualification will be expected to pursue accreditation.

Main Responsibilities

  • Perform technical pharmaceutical tasks and provide organizational support to senior pharmacy staff within Aseptic Services.
  • Assist in overseeing the technical processes involved in the supply of chemotherapy to ensure high-quality pharmaceutical products are delivered to hospital departments.
  • Support the implementation of effective training programs for technicians and assistants working in Aseptic Services.
  • Contribute to proposals aimed at service enhancement to maintain a safe and effective high-quality service.
  • Work as an accredited checking pharmacy technician (ACPT) once qualified.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist in the safe and efficient supply of aseptically prepared chemotherapy and other medicinal products according to established protocols.
  • Prepare documentation and labels for the supply of ready-made aseptically prepared products.
  • Accurately dispense outsourced parenteral chemotherapy treatments, ensuring all product details are correctly recorded.
  • Dispense oral chemotherapy and supportive medications based on electronic prescriptions from the Oncology and Haematology department.
  • Ensure proper storage of materials in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and monitor expiry dates to optimize drug usage.
  • Organize and maintain documentation and records, archiving them in compliance with legal standards.
  • Report any incidents or procedural deficiencies to senior Aseptic staff for corrective action.
  • Collaborate with Senior Aseptic Technicians to ensure timely ordering and allocation of chemotherapy to patients.
  • Assist in ordering patient-specific chemotherapy doses from external compounding companies, addressing any issues related to dose changes or cancellations.
  • Manage the receipting of chemotherapy doses for patients, ensuring accurate allocation and reporting of defective products.
  • Deliver checked and approved patient-specific chemotherapy to the Oncology day unit, addressing any queries from nursing staff.
  • Monitor expired drug stock to minimize waste and maintain the stock wastage database.
  • Participate in the Quality Assurance processes for all products and supplies.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain high competency levels.
  • Participate in the Final Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) Scheme.
  • Attend and contribute to Aseptic Services staff meetings.
  • Obtain and maintain Good Clinical Practice (GCP) qualifications.
  • Dispense clinical trial prescriptions following Pharmacy Aseptic standards after completing necessary training.
  • Ensure safe disposal and recycling of chemotherapy and other medicinal products in compliance with Health & Safety regulations.
  • Contribute to the Health & Safety Team for Pharmacy as needed.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • BTEC or NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent
  • Commitment to Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

Desirable

  • Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician
  • Leadership qualification

  • Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)
