Job Overview

We are pleased to announce a unique opportunity to become a part of the Pharmacy team at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as the Lead Pharmacist for Medicines Management, Formulary Development & Information Services.

Reporting directly to the Head of Medicines Governance, Safety & Quality, this role will oversee the Medicines Use team, which includes the Medicines Information service, management of high-cost medicines, and coordination of the Drugs & Therapeutics Committee activities.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Medication Safety Officer and other Principal Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians across various operational areas, as well as with clinical service lines. Additionally, you will engage with finance, information teams, clinicians, and partners throughout the Integrated Care System (ICS).

You will be responsible for establishing and maintaining effective reporting systems to ensure robust governance regarding medicines use and financial oversight across all Trust sites.

Key Responsibilities

1. Lead the Medicines Use Teams (Commissioning, Formulary Development, and Medicines Information) at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This includes:

a. Managing the operational activities and work plan of the Trust's Drugs and Therapeutics Committee,

b. Overseeing the maintenance of the joint medicines formulary in collaboration with partners,

c. Coordinating the commissioning of high-cost medicines not covered by the National Tariff Payment System, including liaising with commissioners on related issues,

d. Managing the operational aspects of the Medicines Information Service,

e. Leading the Trust's medicines Cost Improvement Plan (CIP),

f. Supervising the education and training of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other staff involved in medicines use.

2. Direct the operations and work program of the Bedfordshire Hospitals Drugs and Therapeutics Committee and collaborate closely with the Professional Secretary for the BLMK Area Prescribing Committee.

3. Serve as a professional role model for all registered clinical pharmacy staff, demonstrating integrity, accountability, and leadership in all aspects of the role.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

Master's degree in Pharmacy with GPhC registration Postgraduate diploma in clinical pharmacy or equivalent

Desirable Qualifications

Membership in a professional body such as RPS or UKCPA Postgraduate MSc in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent Approved management or leadership qualification

Essential Experience

Extensive experience in a hospital pharmacy setting Proven ability to work with and influence senior medical and nursing staff Experience in leading and managing a team, including performance evaluations Proficient in policy development and implementation Experience in evaluating new medicines and their indications Skilled in monitoring medicine budgets and advising clinical teams on improvement opportunities Ability to work accurately under pressure and manage time effectively Experience in implementing cost-efficiency plans at a Trust-wide level Experience in running a prescribing committee or similar

Desirable Experience

Active involvement in pharmacy professional groups or networks Experience with high-cost drug implementation and monitoring Familiarity with HCD systems such as Blueteq Understanding of managing individual funding requests

Essential Knowledge

Advanced understanding of Medicines Information, Commissioning, and Formulary processes Proficient in using medicines information systems

Desirable Knowledge

Understanding of the commissioning of high-cost medicines at a system level Comprehensive knowledge of trust management of patient data and activity coding
