Job Overview
We are pleased to announce a remarkable opportunity to become a part of the Pharmacy team at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as the Lead Pharmacist for Medicines Management, Formulary, and Information Services.
Reporting directly to the Head of Medicines Governance, Safety & Quality, this role will involve overseeing our Medicines Use team, which encompasses the Medicines Information service, management of high-cost medicines, and various responsibilities associated with the Drugs & Therapeutics Committee.
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Medication Safety Officer and other Principal Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians throughout our diverse operations, as well as engage with Clinical Service Lines. Additionally, you will work in partnership with finance, information teams, clinicians, and stakeholders across the Integrated Care System (ICS).
Your leadership will be crucial in establishing and maintaining effective reporting systems to ensure optimal medicines governance and financial oversight across all sites.
You will also have the opportunity to retain any previous clinical specialism you possess.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lead the Medicines Use Teams (Commissioning, Formulary, and Medicines Information) at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which includes:
a. Managing the operational activities and work plan of the Trust Drugs and Therapeutics Committee,
b. Ensuring the upkeep of the joint medicines formulary in collaboration with partners,
c. Coordinating the commissioning of high-cost medicines that are excluded from the National Tariff Payment System, including liaising with commissioners and internal finance teams,
d. Overseeing the operational management of the Medicines Information Service,
e. Leading the Trust's Cost Improvement Plan (CIP) for medicines,
f. Facilitating the education and training of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other staff regarding medicines use.
2. Spearhead the operations and work program of the Bedfordshire Hospitals Drugs and Therapeutics Committee, working closely with the Professional Secretary for the BLMK Area Prescribing Committee.
3. Serve as a professional role model for all registered clinical pharmacy staff, demonstrating integrity, accountability, and leadership in all aspects of the role.

Qualifications and Experience
Essential Qualifications
- Master's degree in Pharmacy with GPhC registration
- Postgraduate diploma in clinical pharmacy or equivalent
Desirable Qualifications
- Membership in professional bodies such as RPS or UKCPA
- Postgraduate MSc in Pharmacy Practice or equivalent
- Approved management or leadership qualification
Essential Experience
- Extensive experience in a hospital pharmacy setting
- Proven ability to work with and influence senior medical and nursing staff
- Experience in leading and managing a team, including performance evaluations
- Proficient in policy development and implementation
- Skilled in conducting critical evaluations of new medicines and indications
- Experience in monitoring medicine budgets and advising clinical teams on improvement opportunities
- Ability to work accurately under pressure and manage time effectively
- Experience in implementing cost-efficiency initiatives at a Trust-wide level
- Experience in running a prescribing committee or similar
Desirable Experience
- Active participation in pharmacy professional groups or networks
- Knowledge of high-cost drug implementation and monitoring
- Familiarity with HCD systems such as Blueteq
- Understanding of managing individual funding requests
Essential Knowledge
- Advanced understanding of Medicines Information, Commissioning, and Formulary processes
- Experience with medicines information systems
Desirable Knowledge
- Understanding of commissioning high-cost medicines at a system level
- Comprehensive knowledge of patient data management and activity coding within the Trust
