Candidate Profile

Required Qualifications

  • A degree in Speech and Language Therapy or an equivalent qualification
  • Competency in Dysphagia management
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Membership with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists

Preferred Qualifications

  • Videofluoroscopy competencies at RCSLT level 3
  • Experience in assessing and managing patients with tracheostomy

Relevant Experience

Essential Experience

  • Experience working with diverse conditions, including respiratory and neurological disorders, acquired conditions, and geriatric care in an acute environment
  • Proven ability to independently assess, manage, and discharge patients with communication disorders and dysphagia

Desirable Experience

  • Experience supervising students and junior staff
  • Background in a Critical Care setting

Technical Competencies

Essential Competencies

  • Proficient in assessing, managing, and treating patients with complex multi-pathologies at a specialist level
  • Skills in evaluating and supporting the use of alternative and augmentative communication aids
  • Ability to prioritize clinical and non-clinical tasks independently

Desirable Competencies

  • Skills to educate and supervise staff and assistants

Knowledge Base

Essential Knowledge

  • In-depth understanding of the pathology related to neurological and respiratory conditions, geriatric medicine, gastroenterology, and critical care
  • Familiarity with the clinical pathway for patients transitioning from acute care to long-term management
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and its application in clinical settings
  • Understanding of National Service Frameworks, NICE guidelines, and relevant national strategy documents
  • Ability to critically evaluate evidence and apply it to clinical practice

Desirable Knowledge

  • Awareness of care pathways for patients with tracheostomy
