Job Overview

The Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group is seeking a dedicated Phlebotomist to join our dynamic healthcare team. This role is essential in providing specialized assessment and treatment for patients with communication and swallowing disorders.

Main Responsibilities

  • Act as a vital member of the Adult Speech and Language Therapy Team, delivering expert assessment and therapy to inpatients facing acquired communication and swallowing challenges.
  • Offer formal supervision and peer support to fellow team members.
  • Oversee the supervision of students in the clinical setting.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Possession of a degree in Speech and Language Therapy or an equivalent qualification.
  • RCSLT Dysphagia Competency certification.
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Demonstrated involvement in continuing professional development activities, including membership in Clinical Excellence Networks (CEN).

Desirable Criteria

  • Videofluoroscopy competencies at RCSLT level 3.
  • Experience in assessing and managing patients with tracheostomy.
  • Completion of Level 1 FEES training.

Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Proven ability to independently assess, manage, and provide therapeutic interventions for patients with communication disorders and dysphagia.
  • Experience in providing support to caregivers in healthcare environments.
  • Exposure to a variety of conditions, including respiratory and neurological disorders, acquired conditions, long-term illnesses, and elderly care in acute settings.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience supervising students and junior staff members.
  • Background in critical care environments.

Technical Skills

Essential Criteria

  • Ability to assess, manage, and treat patients with complex multi-pathologies at a specialist level.
  • Competence in producing clear and concise written documentation of interventions and reports.
  • Capability to prioritize clinical and non-clinical workloads independently.

Desirable Criteria

  • Tracheostomy competencies.

Knowledge

Essential Criteria

  • Comprehensive understanding of the pathology related to neurological and respiratory conditions, as well as older persons' medicine and gastroenterology.
  • Ability to evaluate evidence and apply it to clinical practice.
  • Familiarity with Clinical Governance and its implications in clinical scenarios.
  • Awareness of National Service Frameworks, NICE guidelines, and national strategy documents.

Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge of patient pathways involving tracheostomy.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, adaptable to various situations.
  • Ability to handle challenging situations effectively.
  • Experience in educating patients, their families, and staff.
